i would say a bit of both mate. hot, cold hot cold and the movement of the engine.

Matt, I was having exactly the same problem. I now use Nordlock washers under the nuts. They are a two part lock washer and have proved very sucessful. P.M. me your address and I'll pop some in the post for you.

No, they're a bit hard to describe but basically it comprises two separate serated washers which have steps on the mating faces that lock into each other. |

n.g.l. I know what you mean, I have some of these on my elbow bolts, they are a clever bit of kit.

I use K nuts all the time at work as i said last week at JohnK's place. Have a deformed thread at the end which nips on the thread of the stud. They do a special high temperature variety as well which i believe is silver. |

I don't understand how putting 'whippy whoppy' nuts on there isn't shifting the risk onto the studs unwinding?

What is required is to put a bit of stretch into the studs ....... now how you retorque them when hot I'm not sure but it would defiantely help! Every day is a school day ...........
