Have a look at my homepage. There are some pictures of a Spi head there. The ports and chambers are identical.

I think just a good clean up is in order. Had no gasket issues, so I don't think a skim is in order. Cheers anyway andy *wink*
No. 4 piston is damn oily, so rebuild needed anyways.
Another head would be nice spare parts :)

Good call steve. :) Remove guides & remove material?
Its just knowing the differences between standard & modded...then I can understand whats involved.
So you chaps picking at it helps. :)

this is a 295 not a 940 (and it was painted red when i got it), but it shows the obstruction the valve guide boss's make:

with:

without:

"Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun"

"did you know you can toast potato waffles?"

Chamber is modified, ports look untouched. (The important part)

to be honest i doubt the guide boss is much on an issue with the kind of cams used for turboing..most of the time it is not such a restriction below, say.. 0.450 lift.

just my view:

these days i port a head with the guides in. i just push them back equaly in all ports as a guide then grind the proper shape taking out quite a bit of the guides as well.

i keep the guideboss in place before and after the guide but the sides are ground down quite deep.

porting with guides in keeps you from getting your hands torn off by your BIG grinder while catching in the hole normaly filled with guide.

of course the guides are replaced afterwards.

for a turbo i would probably work on the exhausts a lot..trying to keep enough metal around the guide

that said i have no experience with forced induction heads (having a go at a SC head next week) but have a reasonable grip at NA heads

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

Indeed it is. The inlet ports on a 940 are not that bad, but the exhaust ports are rubbish.. There's LOTS of room for improvement there.
