In respect of fitting the belt. Do i have to cut my orginal one to fit the go an find one that fits down the local motorspares. if i did this it is very tight to the engine. Does anyone no one that does fit?

Never cut your fan belt. Theres no way of fixing it back together (that i know of)

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

think he means to get the length.

just measure the length either the way you describe or with string and then get one the right length. the last bit of the part number is the length, the rest wants to be the same so the profile is right *smiley*

make sure its long enough to go on at bottom adjustment, then short enough at full throw to tighten up.

Using string in the bottom of the pulley grooves will not give you the correct measurement. Belt lengths are meassured where the belt tension threads run, this is just below the surface of the outside circumferance of the belt. It would be better to cut a new belt and measure it up as you suggest, that way you know exactly what the minimum and maximum belt lengths you can use. Waste of a new belt but at least you are sure its going to be as acurate as it can be.

For your information, the numbers in the belt part numbers tells you exactly what it is, IE A805 is an 'A' profile of the cross section and the '805' is the metric circumferance, dont know of many motor factors to supply imperial belts these days.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

This is what i have done

in this where it bolts to the water pump, i have taken off 3mm approx to bring it inline

Rather than grinding here and their, I have used the same length fan belt and used another adjusting bracket and bolted them together works a treat and only cost me £2

hope this helps anyone

The whole idea of fitting a nippon alternator is to get it close to the block so you create more room in the front of the car, by using two adjusters yours is sitting just as far out as the original one would have done, all you have really achieved is spending some money for no improvement doing it like that.

I see what your saying and i suppose your right. I could not see how to get it close to the block without 1 grindng loads off the alternator 2 grinding some off the block which would also grind into the water pump casing. I tried the Piarie belt, they gave me a belt the same size. I did find a belt that fits but had nothing left on the tensioner. Any other advice or pics of mods on this would be great. I like to see things then i have something to go on. thanks

Position the alt as close to the block as possible, then using an old belt cut up, or string, run it round the pulleys.
Measure the length of this to get the length of belt you need.
Go to motor factors and see what they have. Don't ask for a belt off a "such and such" but go off part numbers.

For example the mini uses 825 and 838 belts (length in mm)

Find the length you need and get a belt to suit. You are making it FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR harder than it is.

The number on my belt is 6212 if anyone knows how to interprate this?

To fit the belt you have to remove the alternator as there isnt enough slack to get it over the pulley. Once fulley tightened it sits about 10 - 15mm from the block, leaving loads of room in front. *wink*

Just read Toms post and measured my belt...750mm, so nothing "mini" sized.

no grinding needed then. what about the adjusting bar, even when it is touching the engine the adjuster is just not long enough, can you get longer ones?? or am i just being really really thick? answer to the wife *happy*

Er, have you got the alternator 180 degrees out?

You will still have to use a longer bracket as the fixing locations are exactly opposite each other on the Nippon and the fixing locations on the original mini alternator are both biased the engine side.
