I got as far as getting the cranks spark tested, the material is the same as far as the guy that did it could tell, the next thing needing testing would be the surface hardness etc, I wasn't able to blag this through work though.

i liked the carbs underneath, cooper S twinn su's, i always rembered the S's using 1 1/2 not 1 1/4 as they were for coopers and standard mg 1300 set up's.

I am not sure I understand you hoggy?

The cooper S's used 1 1/4" HS2 carbs standard. but the works cars used 1.5" H4 carbs (like the ones for sale) as they where classed for ralliyng. The reason they where used was that they can be mounted directly on the HS2 inlet while the HS4 can not. change of inlet manifold was not allowed according to the rules. The only street running S's that used 1.5" carbs (HS4) was some aussie police cars.

I never knew that... I (naeivly) assumed the 1275S got twin 1.5".

i thought the 998 cooper had twin 1 1/4" carbs and the bigger engines had twin 1 1/2" carbs. i also thought non had the H4's but as they were used on other BMC cars, they could be used for racing and are now worth silly amounts.

The cooper S did use the 1.25" HS2 carbs. I am NOT wrong on this matter:) The H4 was not used on any factory mini, but on the works cars, thats why they are worth quite a lot. Many minis have had a change to HS4 1.5" carbs later on in their life though, but they did not come with them from the factory.

all those from Norway are wrong! (and sort of right)

i have double checked and they are right that all versions of the cooper and S only ever had twin 1 1/4" HS2 carbs

HOWEVER

the early 1275GT was available from the factory with option A (slightly modded head) or option B (modded head and twin HS4 carb) thus miniminor63 is technicaly wrong when he staited "Many minis have had a change to HS4 1.5" carbs later on in their life though, but they did not come with them from the factory."

has anyone else noticed that these foreign people know more about this British car than we do? *wink*

That kit was developed and sold by ST (special tuning) and not something normally fitted to the cars. it did cost 120 quid back in the early 70ies and made the 0-60 time go from more than 14 down to 10 sec.

However if this is a factory equipped feature can be discussed. One would buy the car with a std head and carb setup (the GT used a single HS4 1.5" BTW) then the sales place would add the ST kit if ordered. ST is the same people that made the works cars, and is thus also the people that in the 60ies mounted the H4 carbs to the S's too.
