Anyone know of a decent book on the A-series gearbox? Need something with quite a bit of info and preffably ah rebuild guide!

I know the haynes has a rebuild guide but wanted something that describes how it works quite technically as its for a sideproject on my uni course!

I though D. Vizards tuning the a-series engine would have info/tech bits about gearboxes in but it doesnt seem to.

Any help would be really appreciated if anyone knows of a book that will help me!

Cheers

Rich

There is nothing that technical about how the gearbox works, to be quite honest your best bet is to get hold of one and have a play with it for an hour or so, you'll soon see how it works.

Must admit, thats all I've done. Got given a gearbox, going to strip down over winter to see whats involved.

As i recall the earlier haynes manuals had a lot more detailed stuff, i think there was a gearbox rebuild bit on them.

I'm going to leave it a while before I try to strip another gearbox, my first attempt resulted in it getting catapulted across the garage cracking the casing*frown*

To be fair I was 17, and it was the first a-series I had stripped. I know loads more now than I did then*smiley*

The best for gearboxs was the haynes manual for a metro early ones. It shows how to strip and rebuild. The 1380 dvd also has it on!

Play with it, select gears etc before you strip it, so you see exactly how it works.

then when stripping it, all the bits will make more sense to you.
They do seem daunting at first, but they are actually quite easy as gearboxes go !

Thanks! Unfortunately my gearbox is at home and im away at uni, its already stripped but I have a basic knowledge of how it all works!

I was just curious as to wether there where any specific books available based on the specific a-series box as the project requires quite a bit of a write up and theres only so much info a haynes and the net will provide me! That and I would like to understand it more so im not just chucking bits into the casing without knowing what they are/what they do/ how they work lol.

But yeah I learnt some of the workings when I took it apart was just looking to brush up and get a solid understanding before I put it together again and describe properly what I've been doing on paper! I'll be ok with the rebuild as I do have the 1380 dvd (and you lot!).

Also found the "How to Modify Your Mini" the other Vizard book and that does have a section for gearboxes and looks very good so I think im set to go!

Thanks for your help :)
