Hi all

I just wanted to get some feedback from those of you that have rebuilt your turbos.

Is this a fairly straight forward procedure?

Is there a step by step guide on this forum?

Are there any special tools required?

What percentage of success have people had?

What problems have been encountered?

Would you do it again?

Has anyone seen this step by step guide before or could somebody comment on it? http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/EngineTurboRebuilding.htm

Cheers
Rich

i've done my own, it was ok but to be honest the shaft had too much wear.

its dead easy with no special tools, other than i recomend some ratchet circlip pliers.

I have done one on my Iveco van years ago and it did 40,000 miles with no problems and one on my min van that did over 15,000 miles no problem.
They were easy enough to rebuild.

You need to have access to a bead blaster. Apart from that, quite simple.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

I need to rebuild one at some point and was wandering if you got the turbo balanced afterwards?

As far as ive been told many times, as long as you mark the rotating assy and assemble it all in the same position the balancing shouldn't be effected.

One main point to look at is the groove the piston ring sits in...if the groove has worn so much that the largest oversized piston ring it won't fit 'snug' it won't seal.

Im about to do mine in the next week or so, but more than likely won't be on a running engine for a good few months...lol

Warwick.

i do this every day at work, its fairly simple, shafts are usualy fine which ever position there put in, we dont have anything there to cut the shafts into balance so we just rotat the compresser wheel, we use a piece of equipment that rotates the shaft then measures the vibration at different points
as for the piston clip seats, as said if there gone the unit is scrap but i believe we hope to be investigating in a big of equipment to re-sleave the main housing
