Just wondered what engine oil you guys use in your turbo engines? Im currently running on Valvoline 15/50 turbo oil with a STP and an engine stop leak. Replaced the oil with that conbination a couple of months ago but the engine is starting to sound abit noisy, so was thinking about draining it out and filling with Duckhams green 20/50. Do you think this will be ok for the turbo or will get to hot and burn?

cheers

Castrol synthetic 5W50.
Keith Calver published a recommendation on his site to use synthetic Torco 0W20! He said he ran this in street and race cars and saw lower oil temperatures and great wear performance on teardown of the race engines and transmissions.
I'm going to Redline 5W40 with the next change - supposedly the best high temperature performance.
To muddy the waters further though, my engine builder friend swears by Chevron synthetic now.
At any rate - synthetic all the way. Also to my thinking, you need a 5W or 0W if possible for winter driving - get that oil flowing at low temperature.
If I get brave I'll try Calver's thin synthetic recommendation.

Really!? is that ok for the gearbox? i always thought that synthetic oils were no good for the A-series, especially that thin. My dad swears by green 20/50 in the A-series but i was concerned that it may not be suitable due to the higher oil temperatures with the turbo.

Snap, you can actually feel the gearbox being much smoother when using this to a normal 20/50

Its gone a bit expensive though

I used a classic engine oil from halfords, it was in a green metal container and the oils was green IIRC cant rememver the viscosity tho, worked well in my tired engine stopped gear crunching when changing down fast I always like to use slic 50 aswell.

this stuff?

http://www.millersoils.net/1_Millers_frame_CLASSIC.htm

It is very pricey for 20/50 but if its as good as it sounds then i may give it ago.

I was temped to use the green halfords 20/50 have numerous tins of it in the garage, but was unsure if it was ok to use with the turbo.

What is the logic behind this Robert, or is it because you have an easily available source, only asking as I may also be able to obtain this at a reasonable rate myself....if you know what I mean *wink*

Ditto, as said it is pricy but its a semi synthetic 20/50 with gearbox additive and my box feels great with it too ( ooh er!!)
Was very impressed with the last strip down finding minimal wear everywhere so will now find out how its done after 2 years and more power.

um , its cheap !!!lol

no thats not all ,
i was running the 20/50 vr1 valvolene ,and ,for 21 quid a can it was good and the gearchange especially was mega slick and nice . i would run this if i could find it nearby ,at a good price .
however , i couldnt so had to find an alternative ,

i loked into the zddp content of the oil and found a chart of oils that have this specified ,and ran through itll i found one that would compare , i then read about this additive and what it does etc , and how modern oils have dropped its content totally or almost totally from its oils ,diesel and petrol ,to conform to emmision laws .
this was the highest additive package oil i could find at around 2.49%zddp ,and this is the additive that protects most against the 4 ball wear test where you shove a ballbearing inot a surface and put more and more weight on it till it marks .
and that ws a tenner for 4 litres at the local truck place , its a quicker flowing oil and so the guage comes up faster , i have 40 psi at nearly all rpms ,even at tickover till it gets really hot , i dont think the box is as slick as it was ,but its a close thing and far better than the shell helix multi i put in to run in ,that was well notchy in comparison and has no zddp to talk of .

hope that helps
