So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

74 deg stats are the right temp for power!

years ago when i was a lad they found out if they ran 74 deg block temps the oil would sludge up over a short time and kill the engine
and economy would suffer also so they upped the temps 82c is most common and 88c winter
get a 74c stat minispares north and drill 6/ 5mm holes around the outer edge

if temps are still over you have other issues and needs investigating especially on a turbo motor

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i run a 74 with no problems, few holes as has been mentioned.

you're thermostat should be fully open so looks like you have other issues.

how old is the rad, is it clean? good airflow etc.

If you are having overheating problems and the stat is working correctly, then it wont matter what temp stat you put in it will still overheat.

Simply the cooling system is rejecting less heat than it is picking up, this will happen with a 74 or an 88 stat. The stat simply controls the temp, and if its reaching 100 there is an issue with the cooling system

thats normal then

the engine will ran at whatever the thermostat temp is

I suggested 88 because unleaded fuels burn more completely at that temp.

Running lowere temps screws up the fuel ecconomy, but with the benefit of a slightly better power figure, how much in reality is probibly small, i dont know

The thermostat controls the temperature of the engine only if the cooling system has the capebility to reject it. if it cannot get rid of the heat the temperature will rocket out of control even when the thermostat is working correctly.

Look at it this way, if the cooling system picks up 10KW of heat energy from the engine and the radiator rejects 9KW, there is 1kW left in the cooling system, this will keep adding up untill the coolant boils over. So, hwen the coolant has picked up 100kw over time, the radiator has rejected 90kw leaving 10kw in the cooling system.

In this situation the cooling system is too small or faulty. a 70 degree thermostat at 100 degrees is full open alowing full coolant flow to the radiator, how will that stop the engine overheating if the cooling system cannot reject the heat anyway?
