OK,

I've got myself a "scrap" T3 (ex Metro) which I bought mainly for sizing (ie, trial build) purposes and then to dismantle for spares or to send in for an "exchange" unit.

It is "scrap" as the shaft is broken but was very cheap so suited my initial purpose.

I'm now thinking of repairing it myself (I've rebuilt a turbo before, albeit a different car, so that's not a worry) but who sells shafts?

I've found standard spares (journal bearings/thrust bearings, seals etc) at a couple of ebay "shops" and a couple of suppliers direct on a Google, but not shafts - when it gets to that stage of repair, most suppliers only seem to want to sell their own rebuild service, not the parts.

I realise I will have to pay to have it rebalanced anyway with such an extensive repair and I may need new impellors as well (they look OK from the outside but I won't know for sure until its in bits) but where do I go to get prices of bits (other than standard rebuild kits) to see if it's worth my while?

Rod.

if the shaft has snapped, surely there will be knock on issues like worn compressor/exhaust housings or knackered turbines where they have had play?

mini13, might do once I know if it's worth it, see next...

joeybaby83, until it's in bits I don't know, but from the outside...

Not sure if the outer compressor blades should be quite that curved?

matty..... I have TIG, but I don't think I'm that good !!!!
Imagine what the balancing shop would say "Sir, you appear to have two shafts welded together...":)

definately doesnt look as bad as the one i have, but looks to have snapped in a similar place (letting the exhaut turbine come away)

how does your compressor feel, is there any wobble/excessive play?

the one i have felt spot on, only realised the shaft was snapped when i went to fit one of steves mod'd elbows, otherwise i would have bolted it on!

Yep, break behind turbine wheel - just pulled the compressor housing and there is some rub marking on the wheel but can't see any corresponding on the housing (strange) but the fact the break is at the other end means the bearings, although shot (far too much side play) have generally protected the compressor.

The photo makes it look worse than it is btw.

Turbine end now soaking in release oil, I hope there is enough shaft left hanging out of the core (when I get it apart) to grab hold of to undo the compressor nut.....

Anyway, if it is salvagable, apart from mini13's offer where can I source and price up spare parts?

Fully in bits now,
I broke one of the six siezed bolts by rushing it (so add 1 hour later to drill it out without damaging the housing) and here is what I have..

But a closer look at the turbine impellor...

So is it worth it for the cost of shaft, tubine impellor, new bearing/seal kit, and getting it rebalanced, or should I just throw it in for "exchange" :)

If someone could point me in the direction of a supplier who will actually sell the bits or, like mini13 (top of thread) can offer bits that might make it viable, let me know.

I expect the exhaust impellor will be the killer as far as repairing it....

i got some bits for an ihi for a mates uno from essex turbo's they could be worth a go,

if you want it the shaft's a tenner including postage, let me know if you want some pics of it.

alternativly you could use the exhaust housing and turbine wheel from an RS turbo, bit bigger A/R so it'll spool later though.

Yep, I'm interested, pics would be nice, PM me if you don't want to post.

I'll certainly try Essex Turbos, although their web site implies they only want to do exchanges like all the others I've tried, but at least they are "local".

btw, I used to live in Mayland !!! - small world...

Rod.

Now anyone got a spare turbine impellor ....

Sorry, now for the really stupid question.....

Although I have a broken shaft and damaged turbine wheel, are they actually seperate components or are they supplied as one piece ?

It must sound stupid but the one I overhauled a couple of years ago (just bearings and seal change), I had no reason to try to take the turbine wheel off the shaft.

Now looking at my broken one, it doesn't seem that the wheel is made to come off.
