Due to the places round here starting to take the piss on prices for swapping tyres on and off rims, I am considering buying a tyre machine. I have compressed air, and there seem to be plenty of 240v single phase ones out there.
Looking on ebay there do seem to be a few out there for not too expensive prices, and seeing as getting two tyres off and two tyres (supplied) put onto rims is over £20 now I'm sure it wouldn't take long to pay for itself.
Anyone know anything on the subject?

No, but good idea, specially if you have enough mates locally who buy tyres from the likes of mytyres or something.

You may want to consider a balancing machine as well, otherwise you are still going to the tyre fitters.

True about the balance machine, but as Iain says its only a couple of quid to have them balanced up. I suppose if I get a tyre changing rig I'll keep an eye out for a balancer to go with it.

Remember they charge you to dispose of the old tyres aswell, something that needs to be taken into account

old tyres go to the local tip.

I change all my tyres manually (have a changing stool), which is actually quite good, although easy to scratch alloys.

Going to swap it for a proper one eventually.

yup, put them in bags with some rubbish and they go to the local tip.

although like tom, its good to be able to change between slicks and road tyres depending on the event *wink*

i cant afford a shed load of rims!

taking the odd tyre to the tip is fine but if you are planning to do this commercially you also need a certificate from the environment which is also an add on. We charge £1.00 for each tyre disposal which is wot it costs us.Ian Avonbar
A decent tye and balancer will cost approx £2k for about a 4/5 year old machine that will do the job properly, those deep dish rims will be a problem on older machines.

I've done them with a pair of screwdrivers before!

Try and get a phase converter to convert to 3 phase, then you can get loads of stuff really cheap as nobody has 3 phase therefore all the old machines go for pennies. You also need a decent air compressor to run a tyre changing machine as they use a fair amount of air.
