Hi all

I have searched for this and can find lots of posts regarding smoke from exhaust but not that many regarding smoke coming directly from the turbo.

When engine starts from cold I initially get exhaust smoke coming from turbo which disappears fairly quickly and also lots of smoke from exhaust.

Does this means the turbo seals are shot??

Cheers
Rich

does it smoke out the breathers and rocker cover?

does the engine run smooth?

what turbo are you running?

Can you explain why it doesn't make sense. No smoke from breathers or rocker cover! Engine is all new and runs fine/smooth. Turbo is stock T3 but has never been touched, came off a metro with 43,000 miles on it, no play in shaft but i'm guessing it needs a service kit. I'm in West Sussex between Horsham and Worthing.

i'm guessing that the turbo to manifold gasket is shot so on start-up it comes out there first, but when running it tends to follow the gas path through the exhaust.

horsham is about 1/2hr for me so if you do need help just PM me.

it does sound like the turbo BUT they tend to be hard to kill and when they do die they almost always have loads of play in the shaft. it could also be the oil drain from the turbo blocked.

what does it drive like?

Iain - Maybe, but i'm thinking that because i also get large smoke from exhaust at the same time that it's more likely to be the turbo??

TS - Unlikely to be oil drain hose unless it is kinked as engine has no miles on the clock and several oil changes. Don't know how it runs yet, will be taking it for it's first run later this week.

i was thinking kinked oil drain hose as the most probable reason for a smokey turbo sinse you say it has no play.

it could well be the turbo seals but with a new built engine it could still be other things (valve sticking open a bit, cracked head, way out fueling) but if it runs smooth it does sound like turbo:(

i was going for the whole cause Rich, more just the reason why you get some out around the turbo *smiley*

can be many many things, if its brand new it may need to settle in a bit.
