hi

the story so far:

i replaced my 998 with a persumed good na mg merto engine a while back to discover there was no oil pressure as the oil pump was goosed, big ends had gone and the box wanted rebuilding!

so i got new oil pump, rebuilt box from dave yardy (icklemini), reground crank plus a few other bits just for peace of mind.

put it back in and iv got it runing somtimes after alot of tweeking with the dizzy. but then it makes a horrible noise and missfires. it also smokes alot of blue smoke which is oil i belive?

i have oil preesure.

done a compression test and all 4 are 150 (is ok?)

any ideas? iv got a gut feeling its somthing like the rings or somthing? maybe a head gaskit?

i have also put a turbo dizzy on in place of the one on there to see if this is the problem but it will not fire up now at all! im just waiting for the battery to charge up.

any ideas before i go mad and take it all out again and rebuild the fooking thing again?

wish i just rebuilt the whole thing now! lesson lernt if that is the case!!!

cheers
josh

i think the haynes is wrong in this area, and alot of people install the dizzy drive into the block 180 degrees out.

get no.1 at tdc on the compression stroke, and twiddle the dizzy till you see a spark at the plug(obviously removed from the engine), this way you know youre in the right ball park.

ok my dad had a fiddle with it today and got it going better.

the dizzy shaft wasnt sparking in the right place (when it was at 1 it was sparking at 2 or somthing)

now its running very rich. i think this is because of the needle i fitted as i have a k&n cone filter, maniflow stage 2 lcb and maniflow stright throgh 1.75 single backbox and alloy inlet. the bloke a minispares gave me a BBC needle as the one he first said wasent in stock. im going to fit the standerd one back in for now and see if it helps anything.

also the clutch has fooked up! it will only press halfway down, weras when i fitted it, it felt fine!!

this is starting to be a right ball ache!!

Check the throw out stop nuts on the end of the clutch plunger. If these are not locked up together they will rattle themselves round.

yer i havent even looked at the clutch issue yet as it was gettin dark. i just relised i havent got a clutch when i was going to take it out for a drive as im desprite to see what it is like to drive with a 1275 lump in instead of the 998! lol

much better in my experiance. I only upgraded to 1275 power the other month and It has gone from being slowish to acceptable. however with an mg engine it shouldn't be slow.

I'm just looking forwards to turboing mine, hopefully next year.

well it looks like im stuck with the 998 for a while!!

the flywheel came off, that is why the clutch didnt go all the way down!
we torqued it up as it says in the haynes book and had the washer on which was folded over as it should be.
luckly its all ok just needs new oil seal and a few other bits.

im just going to take it out put the 998 back in and forget about the 1275 for a while!

im going to consentrate on building the barn, then once that is done i might build the 1275 again and make it a reliable, fastish road engine. say near the 90bhp figure.
then i will get cracking on with the turbo project!

im just getting bored of the 998 now. the mini handles well all suspension sorted out by scruffy, it just doesnt have any power to put a smile on my face anymore.
