Hi

Firstly hi to all forum members. Ive had my 1975 1275 mini now for +/- 3 months and i absolutely love it. Got some major plans to upgrade this baby.

What i would like to know is, i was told that my su needs oil in it apparently only a few drops to be thrown in by the black cover top. Is this true. I opened it up and checked the little dip stick and its dry.

Thanx
Jason

Yep you do need some oil in there, be careful what you use though, look in your haynes manual

I use fully synthetic castrol rs in my dashpots, i was advised to use fully synthetic as it can cope with the higher temperatures better

i just use whatever engine oil is to hand !!

Howver I have been told that TQF is good to use , although i think it seems a little thin

Just fill it up to the top mate ; and squeeze your plunger back in !

I find it works best when you put in just enough such that when you come to fit the damper back in, it meets resistance with about a 1" gap between the top of the thread and the top of the dashpot - ie the two surfaces that would normally contact, there is a 1" gap...

Heavier oil seems to sut mine aswell - I use my remaining supply of Valvoline in it...

Each to their own though - that might not work for your motor!
Whatever you do, tune it up with a set amount of a particular oil, and stick to that! It does make a difference...

well done td old chap about time someone said this as every post ive seen on dashpots on other boards every one seems to overfill the oil ( what a complete waist of time as after a few miles the engine will suck it out) and i use 80 grade gearbox oil and makes a lot of differnce in the hog ( got the power charts to prove it).

ray at T and M says single weight gear oil works well as its not so changeable to heat unlike a multi grade oil which will make the dash pot rise to quickly when hot and leans out the engine slightly.

now of to stowmarket beer festiful to get plasted on some good old scull cracking beer.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Absolutely, you will find that your engine will suck any excess oil into itself and burn it, I always fill mine to about 1cm below the top of the piston bore (not the cover with the threads!)
