o/t fiat brava engine noise

a mate of mine asked me to stop by on my way home from work today to take a look at his car, its making strange noises he says.
it starts and runs fine but it sounds like a diesel...? and its a petrol.
i'm pretty lost on what could be causing this, anyone got any ideas?

has he put deisel in ?????

it could be anything ?

your asking the impossible really it could be anything. if noise sounds from top take rocker cover off and see what the cam looks like i did a engine on one for a neighbour a lobe or 2 had completely worn off the cam.
if noise sounds like it could be from cambelt area could be a idler pulley or tensioner thats knackered.
what ever it is there fiats and there shit tell him to scrap it. lol

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

i make you right about the main problem being the fact its a fiat.!
the noise does sound like its coming from the top of the engine, i was thinking that maybe the cam is the problem?
apparently he drove it home fine last night, started it up this morning and the noise was there? although he said when he started it this morning it made a screech noise??

could be the cam belt jumped a tooth or twom ?

remove the rocker cover and first check the cams not broken or anything is a miss in there adam

then look for jumped snapped serpantine belts etc.......... take it from there


failing that a swanvesta and a litre of unleaded and a dark country lane does the trick ....just a litre as its so expensive now!!.......only kidding

would it still run if the cam belt had jumped?

yes, if one or two teeth this would give the same sound and performance as you describe

but this is rare ish....... usuall the belt snaps

worth checking when you have looked at the rest
