I have a THERMOSTAT 82 DEGREES.
I installed the THERMOSTAT,
Then placed the THERMOSTAT Housing ontop of the THERMOSTAT. but it seem's that the THERMOSTAT dont sit 100% Flush in the head :( as when i place the THERMOSTAT Housing Ontop, it rocks back and forth a tad.
So what shall i do, do i just Torque the bolt up ? or what :)

Cheers lads..

You get the correct thermostat, and fit it as it should be fitted.

I cannot understand that this doesn't fit. All thermostat housings should go over that. Have you got an old early 850 housing? Pictures?

it's a metro turbo head.
Do u think it need choping out abit

As u can see it seems abit high. not sure if it's ment to be like this.

So when the housing goes ontop, it seasaw's abit. so there's alittle Gap (which u can't see in the pic) which will leak im sure.
Thats the same type housing that came off before.

What you reacon, with out slaging please *wink*

Thats a metro housing, are you fitting a front mount rad or do you have the special hose to go from 32mm to the 28mm on the side mount rad?

Anyway, which ever housing you use, it should still fit flush.

I dont see any problem in your picture, so not sure where you are coming from?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Yes I know

You do realise that it will need a special hose to fit the side mount rad?

Yeah front mount rad mate..
It dont sit flush for some reasons.... hmmmm not sure y..
It's like the hole in the housin isn't large enough to go over the THERMOSTAT. if the THERMOSTAT sat down deeper, then think it be ok. just have to grind it out abit. as the hole on the head dont look very even at all... u cant really see to much in the pics.

Cheers anyway

If the top of the stat is not touching the top of the housing ( i find it difficult to believe it could) just torque it down, its probibly just the crush ridge on the stat and nothing to worry about

Chasing out threads just means cleaning the muck/corrosion out, usually by running a tap of the correct size down the hole. As they are blind holes it would have to be a "bottom" or "plug" tap.
Copper slip a name given to copper based, high temperature, anti sieze lubricants, they come under a variety of trade names (just like a hoover is really a vacuum cleaner). An example,

What are the correct size bolts for the housing ?
I remember seeing a link on here about bolt sizes etc. but can't seem to find it.

Thanks for ya help with my Noob Question's lad's :)

The thread in the head casting is 5/16" UNC (note, UNC, not UNF).
The (earlier) Minis used studs and nuts, the studs being UNC at the head end and UNF at the nut end.
The Metros used much longer UNC bolts straight into the head but there was also a sandwich plate between the thermostat housing and the head for the heater supply pipe (hence the bolt being much longer) but your photo is without that sandwich plate.
This may have something to do with your problem in that the bits were assembled in a different order on the Metro.

Good point. The thermostat goes between the housing and sandwich plate on the metro and not on the head itself.

Edit, rubbish picture but you maybe can just make it out...

Maybe thats why then.
The old housing that came off mine,
Is the same as mine is now. ive dove what hogster and Sprocket said.
and all sorted :) just have to make the hole part on the gasket abit smaller.
Anyone know what torque the bolts are.
And the torque on the tap heater thing on the head also please..
Can't fine the settings in my haynes book.

Thanks.

A Lot of fuss over nothing. Just bolt it down *wink*

Torque setting is better at hand tight, rather than what it says in the book.

Also it looks like thats one of the minispares fibre gaskets, so keep an eye on the tightness of the bolts after a couple of trips out, the gasket tends to compress up alot after a while.

ID of mini housing is 50mm
ID of metro housing is 49mm
Just measured them, this may be the reason.

I use that Housing on my mini with a thermostat with no bother, I would have said the gasket would take the see-saw effect that you are saying about! Just try it, fill the cooling system up with water and test, if its leaking you have got a problem! Ron
