Hello!

I am thinking if I should use SC Drops this season or go to the oil pressure supported helical idler route again? I would like to use the SC version but in Austria we have big problems with police when a car is too loud - and you are even more suspicious when your car makes some noise that does not come from the exhaust....

So does anyone have more experience with different makes/designs of the SC drops? E.g 24 theet drops are more quiet than 23 theet drops; or Jack Knight Gears are more quiet than MSC drops etc...?!

Cheers
Harry

Do they really moan about mechanical noise out there other than exhaust notes??

I dont know about the running noise, but a roller idler gear doesnt chatter on idle like the usual bearing sort

Im with nic on this one, i have recently changed from the standard type bearing to roller bearing type drops and the noise is alot quieter when idling and driving!

The problem with our police is that they send you to a official technical control center if they think there is something modified on the car. I don't care about the clattering noise - the whining noise while driving is the problem. My exhaust is very quiet - people tell me they could hear my gears (not exhaust note) long before before seeing my car.

I have wondered if whether really drenching the drops in oil with a jet or similar would queiten them down.

what about constricting the flow back into the sump so that its always sat 2/3's submerged in oil?

I know most of it will be thrown out, but has anyone tried it?

Am I correct in thinking (believe I have read this in a D vizzard book) that if you machine a couple of thou off the tip each gear they will be less noisy?

Would it not lose a little gear strength if you start machining the tops of the gears?

on my last rebuild i was told not to use a block to box gaskets as this somehow quietn's the drops down as it decreases the gap or something...

either way i did this and it worked just made them quieter on idle

I thought that when I read it (but for the life of me I cant remember where I did now?) Pretty sure the article/ feature used a set of JKD gears? Hmmmmm........

As for SC drops, sprocket will be able to confirm this. Ive got the same minispares drops as him yet mine are alot quieter than his are. He thinks its due to the gasket between block and gearbox.

Thanks for your comments; I think I will have to speak about this topic with a gear manufacturer - interesting for me to hear that the timken idler is quieter than the needle bearing setup, theoretically there should not be a difference on what kind of bearing the idler is running?!
Also thought about spraying oil on them - I already have some oil support on my idler setup....

on someones build on the efi minis forum they have adapted the oil drain from the pump to go into the transfer housing, I think it comes out in a position right above one of the gears.

This is a damn good point...

If this is for you K1100 engine why don't you run your oil returns from your head to the transfer housing? This is what I am doing but hadn't thought about it making the gears quieter!!! *oh well*

If it works to make them quieter I'll be gutted, as I like the noise of the drops. lol
