a LIL fishing village on the coast - Newcastle Upon Tyne

anyone else on here ever done this ? i am trying to gather info on me Grandad who served as part of the 8th Army during ww2 as a bren gun carrier driver. i have got his service number, but there is like a handfull of regiment names, all crossed out (bit of a bad sign of their demise) can anyone give me any advice on where to start with this kind of thing ? knowing you lot i am sure at least a hand full have done this. this is my winter project until funds allow continuation of the Turbo....plus i always wanted to know.

i still have his "glen garry" (hat) but the badge was his mates, his cap badge was like a bomb / grenade type affair. from looking at the pics.

i researched his dad from ww1, but as he wasnt killed, and as all records were burnt when the records office was flattened during the blitz during ww2, I got no where with him !

Let me know too. Know my Grandads name, but not what regiment he was in. Not much to go on.

This is all courtesy of my lovely wife who knows everything about genealogy.

She says (in her infinite wisdom) to start here http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/familyhistory/next_steps/

This should help point you in the right direction. There are some links at the bottom of the page, and she suggest that National Archives and The National Register of Archives would be the ones to click.

I used the links on this page for my Grandpa's records, might be a good starting point.
