Hi, im building a 150hp turbo engine and i wondered if its worth while getting a centre main strap fitted? since it will be pounding the mains a bit more?

or do i just leave it standard and fit ARP bolts to the main bearing caps.

thanks.

Well, supposedly it isn't needed on a non high revving engine. Than again it's cheap and easy to do...

It's hard to say really.. Whatever you decide you'll be OK.

If you do go for one go for one with decent bolts, imo a centre strap with cheap bolts is worse than no centre strap.

Cheap enough to do! Like the lads say get the right bolts, am i right in thinking the bolts have 5 dashes on the top?

just get somone local to mill the cap flat, the strap should cost about 60p its only a bit of steel.

Have anyone properly measured the cap size after such a mill and fitment? The hole is bound to change, but how much? I'm about to line hone the block for my new engine build as the bearing had "rubbed" in the bore. I'll do some measuring.
I'm thinking that the strap fitment isn't as easy as it seems.

The hole does change shape. Selby line bores after fitting a strap.
I have never bothered line boring after fitting a strap and rev my car to way over 9,000rpm so it depends on how finnicky you are. Next time I rebuild however, i will be line boring.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Vegard has a point, I had a centre main strap fitted to the block I now have in my car, and it caused the centre main to "spring" and locked up the crank........
I ended up having it line bored to cure it, and a 4 bolt main cap fitted at the same time.

It would take awhile, but will a surface grinder do the job?

It would do the job... In about a fortnight. Get a grinder.
