Do all A series cranks have the same thread for the flywheel and damper pulley?

Im asking this because im using an auto crank and at both ends of the crank the bolt winds in about 2 or 3 turns then stops.

The bolts im using are from a manual engine/crank and the threads are fine, and as far as I can tell from looking at them, so are the crank threads?

Any ideas?

Cheers
Matt

hmm,

does sound like it could be a different thread but i doubt it, but then you can't put anything past BL.

do you have an old crank bolt you dont need? clold stick a hacksaw cut up it and screw it in and out by hand as a makeshift tap to clear any crap out the thread.

helps to heat them cherry red after cutting them and chucking them in water, make them hard.

My thoughts exactly...can't see why they'd bother but you never know? *oh well*

Great minds think alike...if they are the same next plan was to "mod" an old bolt.

The only problem is im not sure why it would go in a few turns then stop? The thing thats making me doubt they're the same thread is, if was a knackard thread I would of thought it wouldn't wind in at all?

Strange??

Nope! Ideally another auto crank would be good to test it in, but harder to find than a manual one (if they are any different at all, that is) lol

The tap ive seen is 5/8 X 16 unf but hard/expensive to come by.

The main things is I don't want to wind a tap in and it be the wrong thread. *surprised*

as i said, wind a cut bolt in an out BY HAND, keep taking it out and see if there is any shite/ rust accumulated in the cut in the bolt.

if there is carry on winding the bolt in by hand untill it goes all the way to the bottom.

My bet is its just rust on the thread in the crank.

I think that you'd be better off changing the bolts than the thread in the crank.

New bolt £Few

New crank £Lots

Cheers Mark, Tap arrived today and worked a treat.

Turs out it was metal dust from re-grind stuck in the threads.

I'll send it back this week along with some beer tokens. *wink*

Glad it worked mate, apologies for the delay in getting it to you, don't worry about the beer tokens, just add a little extra next time you 'help keep TM alive' lol.

I'll PM you a return address.
