Hi,

Mike here... I've been a member for a while now, and posted a few bits and bobs, but never really said who I am or what I've got.

I don't actually have a Mini, my car is a Terrapin which is a single seater with a transverse A-series in the back. I run it in the same championship as Wil & Ben, currently with a 1330 N/A motor, but need more power so going the turbo route.

I run in the 1600cc class, so with the 1.4 equivalency for forced induction I can go up to 1142cc. The original plan was a 998 with a big overbore, but in October i acquired an engine that had been in a Terrapin whihc was scrapped some years ago.

When I stripped the engine, i couldn't believe my luck... This is what i found

* 74mm bore with Omega forged pistons and no appreicable wear on the bores
* 64.3mm stroke billet crank
* Ultralight steel flywheel
* SCCR internals in the box

and the list goes on!

The plan now is to use this engine as the basis of the new turbo motor - the capacity will be 1106cc. The only thing I am concerned about is the 74mm bore - is bore flex going to be an issue?

I'll dig out some pics and post them when I get chance.

I think the bores will be fine at 74mm.

The headgasket could give problems, the prefered turbo gasket (bk450) can overhang the bores at 1380(73.5mm) and above the other copper one aparently dosen't so ethier use the copper gasket, or have a few though taken of the pistons so the cant toch thje gasket at high rpm, or use a Cometic copper shim gasket. they come in 75mm.

thats a "stroke" of luck with that crank!

what boost are you planning on running?

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Resident Cylinder Head Modifier

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

bore flex isnt an issue on the A+ engine

on bore sizes of 73.5 mm
but........ maybe! on 74mm ??

my personal opinion is that its not.

anyway! welcome to turbo minis we are all here to help

The block I've got is an 'S' one.

The use of a 74mm bore and short-stroke crank was quite common in the late '70s & early 80's in Terrapins to stay competitive with the Ford and Imp engined cars - quite a few of them used superchargers too.

Herefordshire

Try it and see

If it all goes wrong it hasnt cost you much, and many of the parts will be able to be used in another project

Hello and welcome though!

Yeah Nic, thats my view as well. Hope i don't damage the crank though - its nice enough to put in the front room as a piece of sculpture!

Welcome, it's good to see something a bit different :) hopefully I'll get to see you're car in action at some point (if I don't get mine finished I'll be doing some marshalling).

If you're worried about the 74mm bore, you could always use the 64.3mm crank in the 1330. Also I think Sprocket has taken his engine out to 74mm with not problems but that was nat-asp.

EDIT:

I did a few searched and came up with these posts:

Don't know if they are any help or not.
