Hi to everyone at turbominis.co.uk and merry christmas,

I have been building my project mini for a few years now (yes i know its taking ages, need motivation !) But, i am determined to get it finished now and have enlisted the help of a few friends so am feeling confident !

Anyway, the time has come to start compiling a specification for the engine and as its taken me so long, want it to be something special.

I have my heard fully set on a turbo and also a 1293 capacity as ultimately it is a road car and want to retain some reliability even when 'thrashed'. I know its not all about HP but as thats all i have to go on, i am after about 140-150hp (flywheel not wheels).

I have been told that this figure should be fairly easy/cheap? to achieve with a turbo, hence the decision.

A few questions:

1. What do people think of avonbar and their products ?

2. as i am in a bit of a rush, should i just order a complete engine or an engine kit ?

3. anyone have any experience of how long these Kits take to assemble ?

4. with a bulkhead box, will my rollcage need a bulkhead bar to replace the strength lost ?

5. Lastly, who can you recomend for rollcages ?

Any advice or information would be brilliant,
thanks guys

Will my project ever be finished !!? hopefully you guys can help !
Its only been like 10 years in the making and I'm only just assembling my engine!

they are helpfull and reliable as far as i have personal experience ,and i think thier products eg heads and cams have been shown by a few on here to make a lot of power .

2. as i am in a bit of a rush, should i just order a complete engine or an engine kit ?

that comes down to the old time versus money ratio ,its a v personal thing ,but buying a complete setup will definately save a lot of time .

with a bulkhead box you can use as is or bolt the subframe back to the body at the top of the frame ,or brace it all up as you say . i feel that mine with the subframe bolted through the floor and no other bracing seems absolutely fine .thats at 150 bhp wityh a wide power band .

5. Lastly, who can you recomend for rollcages ?

no idea !

Any advice or information would be brilliant,
thanks guys

1. http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=3813

2. do you know how to build engines and have the correct tools?

3. refer to 2.

4. Not really necessary, however when I weld mine in I will add metal around and about to put back some rigidity in the bulkhead.

5. Bolt in or weld in?

Thanks for the reply james,

1. looks like avonbar are a good company then, will look into them.

2. I have never built one before but I am a technician for renault so the inside of an engine is a fairly familiar place ! And experienced ppl are always on tap to ask.

4. Where exactly do you add extra metal ?

5. preferably Bolt in as I guess this would be easier to add after the shell has been painted. But if weld in are better, what are the benifits of a weld in cage ?

thanks

Pros:

Make the car more ridged
Cheaper (unless you pay someone to fit it)
More customisable
Possibly stronger

Cons:

Bitch to fit
