Hi All I have been looking around for info but am still confused.
I have a stock 998 in in a 70 mini 1000 and I want to add a turbo.

I am thinking of geting a turbo from a ford firefly and doing up custome pluming.
So my question are:
-What are the week points to look out for in the motor? Headgaskit, Barings...

-How much bost can I get away with on a stock engin? 5,10,20???
-How much power will I get out of it?

-Can I use a stock type Carb? Will I need a carb box or can it handle the pressur?

-Also any numbers for a stock 998 would be help full boar,stock,Chamber,CR...

Thanks for the help.

PS. to save every one some time, things like saying just get a head, manifold, carb, motor... from a metro... dont help as they to hard to find in alberta and cost to much if you do, so unles you are willing to give me one free inporting used parts is not wearth my time and money.

Hello & welcome.

As a starter I'd suggest reading this thread, if you haven't already:

Note Wil has two 998 turbos, one is the road car described above and the other is his hill climber which is a very different beast.

The SU carbs fitted as standard are not sealed and can't cope with the pressure, however the later HIF style carbs can be converted, Turbodave has posted a how to but I'm having trouble finding it.

As for boost, I wouldn't recommend running large amounts with stock pistons (possibly the weakest link), a good IC will help matters mind, also lowering the CR will help.

Good advice from Rob.

You can use the standard SU for a turbo (PPC roller for example), but it's easier to convert a HIF. A carb box shouldn't be necessary.

As for psi, I run 6.5 on the road 998 and it's no problem with 9.3:1 CR, I plan to run 10 psi when the engine gets rebuilt, the standard pistons will be fine with this kind of boost.

As for power, this depends on a lot, if you are just boosting a totally stock 998 with, say, 7psi then I'd guess at 65bhp maybe a bit more. My road 998 has 80ish at 6.5psi.

I don't know what a ford firefly is so can't help.
