So - If you are about as qualified as me to answer this (ie - based on heresay rather than actual exprience) then hold off please. *tongue*

I want the opinions of those who actually know. *laughing*

So....

A new PC is in the offing - and it seems that i can actually get a better deal buying at Walmart (who only does Vista) than direct from Dell and 'downgrading' to XP..

Thoughts?

oh - and do all PC's (ie even base models) still have PCI slots so i can throw in a nice graphics card?

no as i used to sell it to people. it is shit end of. it is no diffrent to Xp apart from the cool flip through function which you can download for your Xp

i hate using it, not only that some printers and programs gont like to work with vista so you have to download patches for them

It's a bucket of shit!

It's just XP with a load of flashing animated crap, trying to compete with Apple's OSX.

Not that good, but if you're buying a decent PC necessary. XP only supports 2gb of RAM and DX9 max, whereas Vista 32 supports 3 Gb and DX10. Vista 64 supports 128gb!!!
So basically if you're building a computer to play games on, go with either Vista 32 or 64 (32 being preferred since 64 hasn't had drivers fully developed for it. Saying that my friend reinstalled it the other day and was saying yesterday how fine it is).
If you're just going to use low end programs, and know that some of those won't work on Vista, go with XP :)
And of course if you have you're own copies, there's no reason you can't change around in the future. I've been through about 4 os' in 3 weeks before!

There is no sense crying over every mistake- you just keep on trying til you run out of cake.

Re: Badger.

I have been using Vista 64 since it's launch, and while at first it was a bit flakey here and there, it is now VERY stable, and great for games (Games is what I use my computer for)

I'd even use Vista for just normal boring computer stuff to be honest - it deals with most things better than XP, seems to be more stable, and the previews of applications as you hover over the busy task-bar is pretty handy when you've got lots open.

No Vote for Xp. Vista is junk.
I just got a 2.4G dule core with 1G of ram and Vista hardly runs. Vista uses 800+M of ram at idle. If you what Vista get some thing with at leat 2G Ram 3 if you want some thing with any speed.

All I can tell you for sure is after using Vista I will never buy any windows based pc againg, Its mac for me from now on.

You are joking right? Macs are useless for gaming! ... but that's another story and off topic.

If you want your Pc to work properly go for XP
If you want it to look like a bunch of gif animations vomited violently onto you screen, and are'nt to fussed about using it productively, go for Vista.

I have used Vista since it came out nearly a year ago.

There is only one bit of software (Delcam) that doesnt like it, but that is because im on 64bit and delcam insists on 32.

Ps. It is not just XP with some bolt on goodies, Vista was the first version of windows to be programmed from scratch, thats right XP still has code in it from the origional Win 3.11!

This is why some users have had compatability problems, I however have had none on several systems and have found it very stable on my Pc's which are used daily

Dave what graphics cards were you thinking of chucking in?

Pci is kinda old hat, it was replaced by AGP for graphics cards which has now been superseeded by PCI-E (express)

Pretty much any pc will have pci slots, but most new graphics cards wont use them

Near Lincoln

picked up a 'entertainment spec' laptop about 6 months ago with vista, seems okay if you ask me

few minor things you have to get used to doing slightly differently, which doesn't take long

although my use only consists of using microsoft office, firefox, and media player really

my desktop is still using xp and i can happily switch between the 2, i don't have any of the fancy stuff turned on though, seems pointless

couldn't comment on graphics cards, i guess as long as it isn't a built in card then you should be okay to upgrade (could be wrong, i'm no computer wizz)

:)
