does it idle smoothly? When it revs slowly, is it revving smoothly or does it sound like it is misfiring? Check the dashpot oil (I presume it is an A or A+ you are talking about) There are so many variables causing this it is hard to list.

Check everything from earth straps to fuel pump, I presume it ran perfect in the donor?

over running or "dieseling" is usually caused by carbon build up around the valves which glows when the engine is running, when you kill the ignition, the compression assists the carbon to keep glowing and it ignites the fuel/air mix. Have you tried disconnecting/replacing that pipe on your carb? it may be that the vent pipe for the float chamber is blocked and starving the engine of petrol. at could also be your vacuum advance being knackered on your distributor, take the pipe off the inlet manifold that goes to the dizzy, take the dizzy cap off and suck down the pipe, depending on which dizzy it is, you should see the internaly moving, if they don't or you can freely suck and draw air, the diaphragm is split.
