when i sorted my intercooler this weekend
I took the orange pipe of that joins the plenum to the turbo;
the pipe coming up from the turbo had oily residue inside it
the plenum was dry howver ...

Sounds like a seal has gone in the turbo dosnt it ?

Or could the oil I am using be a tad too thin ? I used the oild from the haynes manual ; I think it was 10/40

Wonder if I will be better with 20/50

Anyone any clues ??

try 20/50 mate, may make a bit of difference. Does sound turbo related though although if its not that bad then i wouldnt worry untill you've got the chance to have it rebuilt.

funny it did not do it in the metro;
only when I put it in my mini, and gave it some fresh oil

I am just gunna use good old valoline 20/50 racing, i rekon the oil is getting past the bearings ; strange though as its a new turbo on it

Use a pressure reducer to get constant oil pressure, they're about ?15 from minispares.

You'll see them on the advert, i need one actually at some point.

This kit includes a new oil galery plug with an adjustable knob and a washer which is used as a spring seat in the plug against the relief spring. This makes a playform for the adjuster bolt to adjust the engine oil pressure. Winding the knob in increases pressure, winding it out reduces the pressure.

The standard spring 6K853 is easier to use as its compressed length is shorter and softer for fitment. If you have to much oil pressure, or difficulty in fitting, one coil of the spring ca be cut off at a time. Remember that excessive oil pressure can raise oil temperature and absorbs valuable horsepower.

This kit can only adjust the total amount of oil pressure. That figure should be 50-60 psi at anything over 3000 RPM, any more pressure than that is just heating up the oil and wasting power. You cannot affect the idle speed oil pressure with this kit; whatever pressure you have at idle is governed by internal engine clearances, oil temperature, grade and quality.

Wow great information there ... I will look into this ...
Curious though TD seemed to imply the OP should be low
Is the standard Oil pressre 2 high ? I mean I am confused why we would need to change the OP from factory defualt

I am being a plonker here somewhere arnt i !!

Its just not very consistant, its only a spring at the end of the day and they all vary. Using this device means you can compensate for varying lengths/strengths of spring

*smiley*

Its ok rodney, your allowed to ask questions *happy*

I've found that if a turbo is a little smoky, it makes a significant difference when the pressure is 60 psi, to if it is 45psi peak... A worthy consideration!

Definately! might cure some problems. Its also worth noting it only stops the peak pressure so it effect it comes up to 45psi and stays there rather than keep climbing as the std one does.

Nope 20/50 is spot on.

Turbos like thicker oil as it gets that much hotter in the turbo bearings, dont want it going too thin.

The washer is so for the spring to sit on

If not fitted the spring just goes over the threaded adjuster bit which screws in and out.

You might need to cut the spring down as with the washer when it's adjusted all the way out it'll give higher pressure then standard. All it's doing is adjust the point at which the pressure relief valve starts to dumps oil back to the sump. simple but effective

Bit more expensive but you can get the Turbo shaft fitted with 2 oil seals, don't bother with the the staggered gap seals though, they aren't very effective
