OK, this is my old PC which has served me well for (at a guess) 7 years - maybe a little longer?

Anyways, don't tell me to go and throw it away, buy some vista prepared something - All i want is to make it a little better using used components for little expense for the lad to use for playing basic games / educational stuff / internetting on.

I've just loaded a gig extra ram into it, taking it to 1.5Gb. It has what was (at the time) a very 'bling' graphics card (a ge-force something or other - either way its a 256Mb).

The one thing that is still 'old hat' is the processor which is (i think) a 1.2Mhz...

Anyways - here are the specs of the motherboard from an ebay listing:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=170182588643

I know this is a 'socket A' processor - but I've no idea out of all the 'socket A' listings on ebay which will or won't work with this board?

(if link works) here is a sample few...

http://computers.search.ebay.com/socket-a_...gZ1QQsofocusZbs

So - Can someone point to a random 'good deal' that is 1.8Mhz or better - which seems to be the minimum i should aim for...

Cheers,
Turbo 'I understand spanners, not computers' Dave

IIRC the best processor AMD did for the socket A was an Althon XP 3400. However Gigabyte's website suggests that the motherboard only supports up to a 2600 so I'd follow Iain's advice!

unforchantly dave they are right, your best bet is to buy a new set up, a 2600 chip will make it go better, but a new system with a dual core chip and the newer ddr2 500mhz ram will make it electric compared to the old motherboard as well as the sata hardrive, if possiple get one with twin hard drives so all your personal stuff goes on the slave hdd and operating system goes on the other, if it is loaded with xp then 1 g ram will do for now but if vista then make sure it has 2g of ram.

hope this helps

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas
