I have decided to try the early wing mounted cowling on my Mk5 bodyshell. can someone measure its position on a car that has one?

A= from lip where it meets the front valance
B= from front of cowling to lip
C= from rear of cowling to lip

Anyone??

I have the bits but dont know where to screw them on, and as my engine is in pieces cant decide the position....

Terry

here's a pic of the cowling and the fan I got from Summit Racing..It fits good, I just need to modify the mountings to allow the fan to poke through the hole towards the rad.

couln't really get A but measured a bit lower down, from the lower "tab" that holds the rubber seal to the front edge of the inner wing which i make 65mm

B ( from RIGHT at the front edge of the cowling to the top edge of the lip (measured down wards with a vernier) 19mm

C (frm RIGHT at the rear edge to the top of the lip measured in the same manner, 79mm.

Thanks mate,

I'll rush down there now and see...

Edit... I did..
Its easier than I thought. The 10" hole locates the position up and down and side to side and I rotated it till I got the 65mm at the lower tab, at that point the top measurements were in the ballpark. this gave me around 15 mm to the susp. tower..

This should work..Thanks again!

Got it all mounted up, looks fine. I didn't bother spot welding there was plenty of lip to use 1/4" bolts. I set the fan in around an inch at the front so wheels should clear OK.

I have finally got this thing on the road and just took it for a long blast on a sunny, 75 degree day and first impressions are that this is a worthwhile mod. The cowling seems to be keeping the temps much lower than I am used to seeing, the temps are real stable and the electric fan did not even think about coming on even when I let it idle for a while.

Getting the engine in was a little more difficult but OK, and some of the gains may be because I lost the old electric fan with a lot of blades which may have been blocking the flow a bit, but I would say the the 30 quid or so I spent on this mod was well spent. I'll update again when we hit a few 100degree days!!

Well not quite a 100 degree day yesterday but mid 90's and a little humid.. the heat index must be approaching 100.

Ran around for a while, good mix of driving and it seems fine.. the fan comes on shortly after I stop at a light and its not able to get the temps down enough to turn off again but it does hold it and the temps do not run away. 5 mins after getting running again its down enough to turn off again.

Aside from the cowling and fan I have a 13row oil cooler as an aux radiator plumbed in between the head and the turbo. I am also running water and waterwetter only, no antifreeze and an 82 degree stat.

So I'm pretty sure this setup would be OK in the UK, the only thing I may look at is a small fan on the aux radiator to help with the temps at idle..

Another update..

Its been below zero for a month..

This setup is not good for the winter! it never gets warm.. I have had to block the aux rad to even get it to come off the endstop on the gauge. Plus the carb ices up because I have no water going through the inlet manifold..

No problem really, I dont drive it much in the winter, they chuck salt around like crazy here .. sounds like you guys could do with some.. but something to keep in mind if you intend using the car in the winter..
