I am doing a set of ball joints at the mo, and have noticed somthing odd,

the little seat removable thing that sits under the top ball joint seems to have sideways play, perhaps 10-15thou, also the face where it sits has worn giving an uneven surface but i think i have got round that by using a mill bit to re face it.

Its been so long since i've done ball joints I cant remember if there is usally any sidways movement in this bit.

Is this normal or should i find another pair of hubs?

leeds/wakefield.

i beleive the insert to which you refere performs a similar job as a lash cap on a valve, it just sits between the little spring and the bottom of the pin , and acts as a bearing surface keeping the pin pushed up into the cup,

lol @ shane.

well I found another pair of hubs I forgot I had and they have no wear but still have the sideways movement, I guess they were all like that.

It just concerns me a little that if the ball joints are a bit worn as they move they would wiggle the seat against the hub and the hub will obviously wear as it is softer.

Oh and yes I do have genuine ball joints.
