Yeah well, effectively we have an English back packer here who is keen for a job & says he`s a qualified Mechanic trained in England,,,

so my question is what sort of paper work would he have if he was qualified in England & also what is the training method, as in how many years would he have worked & is there some TAFE course or what???

what`s the go & what paper work should he have & who can we contact to check (cause he doesn`t actually have the paper work with him)

any help is obviously well appreciated

Test him

Ask him to do a service on any car you want and first thing he should do is put the kettle on.

my mate is a qualified mechanic here. he has an nvq so ask him for that. its like a hands on qualification. there are set tasks to do to get it.

either that or he is a magnificent bull shitter. which also puts him in the qualified mechanic category!

It all depends on the route he took. City and Guilds qualifications are done through one day a week at college or in block release for a month at a time. He may have a National Diploma in Automotive engineering or even a Higher National Diploma. Those are the main ones, if you find out what he has should be able to give you a rough idea of his ability.

As for timescale an apprenticeshup is normally five years to learn the trade. As for checking qualifications you should be able to contact the college where he done the course as i know my old college keeps records from the past 5 years.

I kinda break most of the rules in that i have all of those in various parts of engineering and a HND in Motorsport engineering. Not bad for 21! 8-)

to be honest what ever qualifications he has from england the the motortrade mean fuck all. hell have either city and guilds or nvq levels 3. sometimes not really worth the paper there written on.

its more important to check his references, if hes only just qualified then im affraid youll just have to give him a chance

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

cheers thanks guys, i`ll ask where he trained & his last place of employment as a mech & go from there, i normally would bother to check, just that he doesn`t seem quite right to me, something tells me that he just wants a job here & feels like he`s just sayin stuff to get it, if you know what i mean?

anyways, thanks & i`ll let you know what happens *smiley*
