OK, so I'm doing it in the reverse order to most of you.

Although I have a shell (needs lots of work), and enough engine bits to choose from, and have recently collected enough T3 parts to get one working (thanks mini13 from earlier), I decided that it's too cold in my garage to do any mechanical work at the moment. I've got my MiniSpares X-pin diff on order, I'm trying to sort out some pistons from Australia (as per "For Sale" thread) but I still decided to do the last bits first....

Arrived yesterday from the US.

Today, left hand bag of bits built (OK, it was the easy one, but I wanted to prove to myself that I could still solder).

The harder one tomorrow - Maybe some car or engine bit photos to follow soon!

Well done.

That's the stim built then?

Yes, Stim built first to get back into the hang of small component soldering (it's about 6 years since I built PCBs this small) and I now know I need new glasses !!!

Just placed my order with MS Australia for pistons so maybe some real work in the near future.

For those thinking of building their own Megasquirt, I would recommend they also get the JimStim instead of the standard one. It's more expensive but it can simulate a 36-1 wheel (as well as a bunch of others). That makes bench testing the actual setup you're going to use much easier.

However, I'm a bit biased because I'm the one providing the boards and programming the CPUs for them.

Even though Im new here, I'm tempted to say "Use the search button..." :):):)

It's Megasquirt engine management in kit form, cheaper than buying it ready built, esp. if imported from the USA.

The "stim" is a simulator (stimulator?) to replicate certain engine inputs to help set it up.

Only 1/3 built but this is the point they say to upload the firmware to the CPU and, much to my surprise, it worked...

Back in the real world, my pistons are now ordered from Andy (MiniSport Australia) and my X-pin diff failed to arrive today from MiniSpares with their courier (UPS) stating on their tracking system that they would have delivered it but apparently they couldn't find the NUMBER of my road... Funny, I thought in the UK, roads had names, not numbers... (their tracking system seems to use US based software).

Back to the soldering iron then...

Good work!

I recommend you find some sort of power supply other than a 9V battery because you're going to go through a few real fast. Any power supply that can provide 9-14V DC and 300-700ma will do.

Cool!

normally the worst bit is getting the USB cable to work.

a bit premature but be casrefull when you get to rigging the coil in, if you have the dwell set to long you can easily kill it,

also you can kill the coil by wanging the rpm right up using the stim, say for example if you set the dwell up for 8krpm max and a freind comes round and you decide to shw them what plugs would look like at 18-20krpm.

Well, the sun was out today (for about an hour) and the garage wasn't totally freezing so I decided to do a bit in the right order...

From this,

To this,

Via this,

Using these,

I still need to tidy up the hole and cut the passenger side cut-away out and form the plate to suit before I get my TIG out, but it's a change from the soldering iron...

Yes, but when he was "butterpoppy" (or something like that) and I bought it off eBay before I joined this forum !!!

Well engineered, I've taken quite a few photos as to how I cut the hole

OK, soldering iron and body repairs ignored for the last few days but...

Doesn't a newly bored/honed block look nice.
Even thought it's "only" 73.0mm bore, I had the bores offset by 0.25mm (10 thou) outwards to get better wall thicknesses overall between the bores, and the result is 3.7mm between 2-3 and 3.9mm between 1-2 and 3-4.
More importantly the gasket fire ring is inboard of all bores by at least 0.2mm.

For the centre strap, I had it done like this

They said they would normally just mill it flat (note, this is not TMF where an angle grinder would suffice...) but I wanted the full height of the retaining lugs for the thrust washers.
The resulting upstands are quite thin so I'm thinking of putting a bit of braze, or a small TIG run, between them and the strap (with them bolted in block but without the crank) just in case they suffer from fatigue... Any thoughts people ???

Rod.

nice work retired, but i would put a greater angle on the drives side of the turbo box in the baulk head to give better clearance for the turbo inlet hose.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Very good progress.:)

At least you can select the best condition components from that old lot.

I'm finding myself collecting crap at the moment. I went into a garage with a mate the other day to get something done to his car and saw a 1275cc engine lying in the corner. money changed hands and it is now at home.
