well i've done the 1st bit & refurbed my mainshaft gearset with new bearings, detent springs etc etc, put it in the box & 1st gear seems really loose, i've looked at mr fentons gearbox pics & dont seeany differances to mine, what goes between the 1st gear & casing centre web? does the laygear stop it moving around, i'm taking it apart & re-checking all 2moro

i'm on the look out for 2 parts for it too!

i'll put a wanted out lol

cheers chaps, oh arrrh, i must say the gearbox although i may have somat wrong has been pretty easy to do, spech is standard gearset, 3.44 with X-pin minits diff central pickup pipe too, should be ok hey chaps? i'd have like a 3.6.....crown 'n' pinion but cant find one :(

I've been rebuilding mine just recently and have also used the miniforum link. My metro Haynes is not at all detailed so I guess the later copies have been edited.

It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt... Then it's hilarious!

Strange, what sort of "loose" ? end float or "wobble" ?

The gear itself sits on a simple split needle roller on a collared sleeve (needle at the join always falls out when you seperate them!)

The sleeve is exactly the right length to set end float (and obviously the needle roller stops "wobble"), BUT the sleeve has to be trapped between the 1/2 synchro hub and the 3rd motion shaft bearing, diff pinion and big retaining nut. So it doesn't all come together and the play disappear until the bearing, diff pinion and nut are all done up.
Also, the outer race of the bearing has to be trapped by the (shimmed) retaining plate or the whole shaft (with 1st gear) could still move.

I have plenty more photos if it helps (I took loads when I did a box a couple of months ago and I'm just doing another one now).

the shim & needle roller bearing are pushed in home, 1st/2nd syncho/1st gear over the top, the bearings are all new, the gap between the 1st gear & casing is the same as in the pic above, but......it can be pushed & touches the casing obviously not good to run that way, i would'nt!!!!

all components are invery good condtion too!!!

the pics above are gr8 i must say!!!!!

whats said above about trapping the parts sounds like what the prob could be..... makes sence, i'm gonna take the centre bearing out 2moro eve & remove & reassemble the shaft

i'm glad i've took the chance to give a gearboc recon a go cause i understand whats what n where :oD its the little things that satisfy hey lol :oD haha

In my picture above, there is no way the 1st gear will move towards the casing web !!!
We need to understand why yours can.
The collar on the sleeve I show in the top photo stops the 1st gear moving right, the equivilant at the left is the inner race of the 3rd motion shaft bearing - the inner race diameter is large enough to act as the second collar.
I'll do another photo shortly.

Sorry for crap photo colouring but,

Blue is where the inner sleeve (and needle roller) is trapped by the bearing, and green is where the 1st gear runs against the bearing inner race acting as the second collar.

So if the nut on the end is done up and the sleeve/collar/bearing trapped, there is no way the gear can move along the shaft.

So what's different with yours ???

Looks like you did your edit before I posted the second photo but, yes, sounds like the sleeve/collar isn't being trapped by the bearing.

the the outer part of the 1st gear can touch the outer race of the 3rd motion bearing there is def something amiss, have you tried the old 3rd motion bearing to see if that is the problem?

unlikely, but maybe the inner race isnt as proud as it should be, do you def have it in the right way round? I cant think what it looks like from memory?
