Hi all, started a BMW headed mini motor about 3 years ago, like others got sidetracked but now having come across this site, have been inspired to finish it off. As can be seen I'm using mechanical injection, I've allways had a soft spot for lucas injection having owned a triumph PI in the past and besides i've got the parts. One question I have is, has anybody replaced the valve springs with softer ones? As the bikes ones are very heavy and would put un-necessary strain on the belt as well as sucking power.
Enjoy reading about everyone's projects, talk to you later.

Nice one!
Are making your on kit?

You made a adaptor for the Lucas injectors to fit in the BMW fuel rail?

I dont think softer springs would be wise since BMW knows their valve dynamics. Spring force is largely determinded by the lifting profile of the cam (although the weight of the chain or belt has a influence).
So unless you would change the cam profile it is wise to keep it that way IMHO.

Conversely the valve springs are quite soft- in comparison to car springs, and give the cam belt an easy time - from memory they are something like 70 n/mm - this is one of the reasons there is no belt whip on my motors. Valve float is at 10200rpm using stock springs and valve mass.

- nice conversion by the way

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

You should get some pics up in the "show us yours" section. Always interesting to see others take on things.

clubman ,
if you have a 10200 rpm spring redline ,and you rev to 8500rpm, then its a waste of horse power to compress those springs .
, spring weight tends to be decided by mass of valve assembly ,cam profile ,and rpm .
re springing to suit 8500 if thats what your running for example ,would release more power .
