My mini turbo has developed a problem. When trying to start the engine, its as if the battery is flat. It is a new battery, and the problem is intermitant.

I thought the clutch may be sticking, checked the starter motor and renewed and the problem still there. I have just removed all
spark plug leads and it turns over fine. As soon as the leads, both old and spare set, are reconnected the problem reoccurs.

I have spoken to Ian, at Avon bar who recomended more earth strap leads, I have now tried this and the problem is still there.

Any suggestions would be welcomed. Really scratching me head!!! I know its simple, but aint they the worst. Thanks, Dave

i cant see any other reason than timing if the engine turns over well with the plugs in but plug leads off, and doesnt turn over with plug leads on.

The coil doesnt draw that much power from the battery!

Have you tried putting a jump lead directly from the battery to the starter motor. Thus eliminating wiring problems.

why would it turn over with plugs in, leads off, but not, plugs in leads on, other than timing?

try it with the coil lead off and leads on, then it it still turns until you put the coil wire on then it has to be timing or a wierd short on that coil wire. although that wire would melt rather than stop the engine turning.

I'm with Iain..
The timing is advanced so far that it fires too early and stops the engine.. are you sure the timings OK?? advance weights siezing?
Terry

EDIT read that again.. are you saying its just clicking (not turning over) or barely turning over and not firing or turning over normal speed and not firing?

When you have the problem if it turns over OK when dizzy or coil is disconnected then its too far advanced. Seems unlikely, but Only thing I can think of is that the mechanical advance mechanism or the vacuum advance is sticking at the max advance setting.. are you having trouble with the idle? does the idle ever stay high after you have revved the engine at all? or does it always idle OK?

Next time you have the problem try disconnecting the vacuum pipe, take the dizzy cover off and make sure the vacuum advance is not stuck and finally try turning the dizzy anticlockwise a bit and see if it helps at all.

good luck!

Problem solved... after a long day in the cold. It was the ignition module. A bit suprised as it is a new one. Luckily i had spare one.

Thanks for all your help, a good bit of brain storming always seems to do the trick.

You have just saved my mini from being turned into a garden feature.
