So last night Matt (MiniWilliams) came round and I took him for a blast in the mini. I'd changed the clutch on the Saturday and all was well. But then it started slipping again.

I wasn't happy that I had fitted the oil seal properly and a few drops of oil made me fear the worst.

Anyway, I've taken the clutch out and it's not contaminated, although the seal was leaking and I'll try again with a new one.

The problem is that it's a verto clutch and I've put in the later, larger, plate thinking it'd be better. However, because the flywheel has worn over the years the new plate is only contacting the unused part of the flywheel (maybe 2mm) rather than the whole surface.

Ideally it needs resurfacing I guess, which is a pain.

Anyone have any ideas?

Good stuff mate glad you found the problem, i did enjoy our little spin the other night, it was nice to got out in a turbo mini again! around the stunning roads you have near you.

yes a reface is an idea. the other is and this itnin your words not as it's not the best mini in the world, YOUR WORDS BUD, you could just shave down the clutch plate so it take off the parts that hit the high points, leaving the rest of the plate in the main part with good contact.

The thing is, the standard 70,000 mile clutch lasted 2000 more miles with the extra turbo power. What I have now is a better verto set-up that is more than capable considering the relitevely low power I have (less than 90 bananas).

I'm also not overly bothered about the minor improvements that a lighter flywheel might offer, and I also don't want to wear the thrusts as this car does 8 to 10k miles a year.

And, having recently moved to Yorkshire I've become a tightarse!

Don't bother taking it off, just lift the engine out on your own by disconnecting all the engione to trans bolts, then lift out the gearbox, then re-assemble, then re-fit the flywheel, and with it sat on the floor, start it up, then using a file through the starter hole simply machine it flat yourself. Easy!

Then disassemble, fit the transmission into the mini, then drop the engine onto the trans, fit all the 1/4" bolts, then you're good to go.

first time you do this it'll take as long as just removing the flywheel - next time though, you'll manage all this in a half hour - or less !!!

Update.

Well I took the flywheel to Carl and he did a smashing job of facing it off. Also he took some off the height of the lugs to increase the clamping load. cheers Carl.

Sadly, we took a bit too much off the lug height, so the clutch barely disengaged, and the clamping force was very low too.

I've now shimmed it back up a bit and got it all back together, so fingers crossed for this test drive.

Well Will wev'e learned something there,
i took of 1mm , so thats obviously an awfull lot on these finger type covers

are you refering to the poor clamping force before of after the facing off?.

1mm was too much, the fingers were pretty much flat. But as I didn't know if it was too much I tried it anyway. It had basically just gone past clamping and into the release position.

I put 0.75mm shims in (it's all I had).

Been for a blast in the dales and it works a treat. I think 0.5mm would be the maximum you could remove.
