I noticed I have a leak from where my downpipe connects to my manifold ;
Funny when I tried to start it the other day ; It blue smoke out of the clamp like a dragons nose !

Ok ; a leak is a leak and I can put it right ; but a leak that close to the manifold must have affected my running wouldnt it have ?

not quite sure how it would affect it though but I know when my 160 BHP anglia was on the rollers; the ex. manifold started leaking and power dipped of considerably ...

Anyone know why ?

Either w ay I gotta sort out my leak dont I .... can I get the standard clamp to do up enough is another question !

Leaks on a turbo exhaust arent quite as costly as NA one at all really.

The clamp isnt that bad to do, just needs careful prep and then its fairly straight forward.

Leaks pre turbo are very bad...

After that its not so much of an issue, but still well worth fixing! There is such a thing as too little back pressure.

Yeah thats what i meant, assumed he meant it was leaking at the downpipe join.

yeah it is the downpipe join, so my back pressure will be affected ..... Its so annoying having to break my hand in three different places so I can get it in the gap to tighten those bloody clamp bolts !!


but I guess i will have to do it

It wont make that much difference to be honest at all. It does need doing but i wouldnt stress about it. Worse thing about it is the fumes that find a way into the cabin. Or atleast they did when mine leaked!

Its not that bad to do really.....

haha steve i know how you feel! next time though, im not attempting it ever again wihtout taking the top engine stabiliser, the carb and manifold, every pipe and the clutch slave off.

Just removing the slave should be enough!

I am going to make a access plate i think in the bhead box ...

like a 2 inch square section with a 3 inch section that screws back over the top

or I may just try breaking my wrist in 4 places !!!!!!!!!!!

ok, lets get back to basics here.

1) have you welded the bolt heads to the clamp?
2) do you have a 1/4" socket set, or are you trying to do it with a 1/2" ratchet???
3) have you ensured the clamp fits (and modified if reqd) over your downpipe properly?

If you've done/got all the above, It should take around 10 minutes from start to finish (including moving the slave cyl for a little more access) to fit a downpipe without it leaking or whatever...

I am just being a bit of a girl thats all !!!
In fact I have very small lady like hands , just think its a tit of a job
I use a 1/2 ratchet spanner with a moveable head
can get right in there

Oh yeah I did mig the nuts on !!!

Weather is Crap as hell but still got all that 10/40 out today and put in 20/50 and she sounds a whole heap better and it not puffing out smoke from the back box anymore ..... so i rekon the thin oil was getting through the seals
