I'm rebuilding my Dads engine, I've stripped the engine down to find that it's already +020. Does anyone know what pistons these are?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

They look similar to my AE turbo pistons especially the skirts but the numbers don't match & after going into the garage it would appear that the no. of rings are wrong.

A google search says it's a 70.62mm AE piston for BMC engines.

A bit more searching seems to point to the MK 3 Midget, so pretty much the same as a coopers. I'll dig out my MG books in a minute and see what I can find. However I'm not going to pull the engine out of my midget just to see what the piston numbers are.

Bit more searching, seems to point to the Midget pistons. Vizard says "Robust engine, good for up to 7K rpm"

I'd say they're bog standard 1275GT/Allegro pistons. Do the crowns say M2210?

sorry guys, it's not my mrs, she was going todo it for me but never got around to it, it's only a poster, although bigger than life size, I think it's sarah from girls aloud.

Anyway, back to the pistons, all they say on top is +020

why are 4 rings bad Carl? it's only for my dads clubby estate, don't think it will ever see 5k, let alone 7k.

is there any way of checking rings for wear?

Put the rings in the bore and measure the gaps with a feeler gauge.

Also measure the clearance between the ring and the ring grove (sorry don't know the proper name) with a feeler gauge, not really checking the rings here as the softer pistons tend to wear first. If that doesn't make sense let me know and I'll take some photos of what I mean, sadly I don't have a chesty lass to pose in the background.

what is an acceptable ring gap? (when the ring is on the bore alone?

Better to get new rings as if the engine they were in overheated in its life, they will have lost their tension.

Rings are not that expensive, but I supose you need to ad the cost of a hone. If you go this route and hone the original bore, leave the old ring on the top and replace the rest.

Dont you have a haynes manual?
