Will they not charge over USB? then you could just use a simple cheap adapter

I'm Not Sure Chris but i was hoping to have a 230V plug in the car for other things, i thought it might always be handy.

my dad uses one to charge his camera batteries and, with the use of a surge protector, charges his laptop up as well.

Where is surge going to come from? It seems the in thing for computer shops to sell at the moment, just extra profit for them and no benefit for anyone. They will not protect against lightening strike which is the only surge you are ever going to get. Sorry OT a bit.

As for inverters, I have used ones from Maplin with no problem. I doubt anything you use will have a big power drain. Most power supplies for laptops and battery chargers will give a power rating or current rating, juts make sure you buy an inverter that will supply your biggest consumer or all your little ones added together.

I use one of these in my Motorhome.

Runs the TV and the PC as a DVD player at the same time, so plenty of oomph.

make sure you run it with a surge protector the inverters tend to spike abit.

There really is no point in surge protectors IMO. I have worked on / commissioned power systems on oil rigs where the power is all over the place, voltage spikes the size of which you will not see on a crappy inverter powered of a very stable 12v battery. Onto those systems I have plugged all the above mentioned pieces of equipment and never had a failure. We are talking off he shelf PCs, laptops, battery chargers, phones, etc, etc. Surge protection is BS and another way that PC world rip you off and scare you into buying things that you don't need. Rant over.
