At the moment the starter solenoid is just "clicking" tried the spanner on the two terminals, not even a spark.

So any ideas?

Now before this the car would crank but not fire at all.

But first up is the solenoid problem.

I have fitted a new solenoid but that made no difference at all.

Could it also be the starter motor has locked?

Pre-verto 998.

Cheers

I assume the battery is actually charged.

Is there a good earth, my battery terminal was not completely perfectly seated and I was getting similar symptoms.

Its being jumped off my 4x4 (2.9TD so should be good enough)

The battery earth looks a bit suspect.

I have ran a test meter and its reading 12.68 on one side (battery to solenoid) and 0.48 on the other, solenoid to starter.

Goosed solenoid?

If that reading is while the solenoid is being operated and using the same earth point, then your solenoid is chuffed.

Thats reading with ignition on.

Read less with new solenoid on.

And no-one stocks Mini solenoids anymore. (motor factors that is)

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

but if you jump across the posts with a spanner and it still doesnt work it cant be the solenoid.

i'm going with a battery/earth connection either at the battery, or at the solenoid or engine to body.

Thats whats so annoying.

Will replace the battery earth and clean up all the terminals and mounts for the solenoid to body.

Found a fair few wires loose and no idea where they are meant to go.

Its one of the problems of people doing work cheap instead of doing it right.

On the bright side, once its done at least it will have been done right!

(Friends Mini, will be up for sale once its all working and cleaned)

Think its the starter motor, just whipped it off, going to rebuild it now.

Opened starter, missing 2 bushes!

Replaced the cable from solenoid to starter as well, when checked the old cable one end was covered with black tape, removed that to find that the plastic cover had melted.

Starter motor will be on by tonight.

Fingers crossed.

(battery is a brand new halfords on charge as well)
