This may well turn in to a good how to, anyway here is my problem.

I have a block, which has a snapped bolt in the engine mounting hole. Obvously someone before me has had a go at drilling it out, and has now snapped a drill bit off in the hole at a strange angle. (looks like the engine was still in the car when they tried drilling it out)

This is the engine mounting on the flywheel side of the engine.

What is the best way to get around this? I was thinking to redrill both engine mounting holes closer to the back of the block and retap new threads and then shorted engine stabilizer. But I'd rather get this brocken bolt out and helicoil. Thoughts?

Hmmm,

the drill is the first problem as they are hard as fuck....

is there anything to get hold of on the drill bit? or could you get a dab of weld on it?

i'm thinking, get hold of the drill bit and try to slide hammer it out.

once the drill is out i'd mill the bolt and hole out bigger and helicoil it.

mate, just check using a punch to knock bits of drill out. doesnt matter if you goose the hole as the helicoil will cover it.

done this before on a few odd things and it usually gets there in the end.

other option is drill above and below, then make a block with a dowel in to locate the engine steady in.

the best option is to EDM - electro spark it out. but since its a big item that wont be so easy to get done.

I was going to suggest EDMing, but it may cost a bit! *oh well*

I would just redrill the one thats broken (towards front of block) make a new bracket (or just redrill the bracket also) and use an adjustable tie bar! *wink*

there is no subsitute for the RHS engine steady.

you'll find most cars on here have the "additional" ultimate engine steady. additional being the important word *smiley*

drill it out and re tap it, easy. or helicoil. i did the same bolt. i think it was M8 from memory so easy to come by.

good thing is that its easy to get at etc, just pop the exhaust housing off and it will make life easy. run the tap down the other threads as well.

worst comes to its a helicoil, sure someone will do it for pennies if you post it to them, i would be my helicoil kits havent arrived from work *wink* but if your in no rush then i'll do it for a tenner should you post it to me.

But i wont bank on it being done for 4-6 weeks as i'm flat out and not often home

Carl, steady on fella!! lol
ok it's a steady and not a mount!

anyway I've got it out now, although it looks like the hole is pretty butchered by the previous attempt to remove. Does anyone know what size drill comes with a 5/16 unf helicoil?

8.2mm so my book says which sounds about right.

i know a lot of people wont agree but i would do it M8. purely because i can get helicoil's, bolts etc much easier!
