right need some opinions please people on the above. 1.3 toyota starlet engine.

option1
fit the standard intercooler which sits above the engine and needs a bonnet scoop to get air in, this is how there fitted as standard to starlet turbos so i know it works but dont want a bonnet scioop really.

option2
fit the ezzy charge cooler ive got but the radiator for it will be crammed at the front and will probably sit about a inch off the exhaust manifold which does have a heat shield, but i assume the heat off the manifold/ turbo will affect the efficiency of the efficency of it. thiss will also need lots of work on the turbo pipe work.

option3
option1+option2. fit both together but is that worth it.

its a standard 1.3 turbo with about 133bhp but will obviously hoping to tune at a later date.

thanks in advance

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Any pics of what kinda space you've got free between the engine and shell at front and sides etc..?

Is their any space for a heat shield between the exhaust and rad?

The beauty of charge coolers is you can put the radiator anywhere. I'm not a big fan of the idea, but you could locate the rad under the boot floor.

Well, I'd say the first picture is a crap location for an intercooler, and the second picture is even crapper for an intercooler OR a charge cooler heat exchanger...

How doe things look around the end of the trans, or under the turbo, or to the right of the turbo?

Altho no ideal it will be ok with intercooler at the top (as i see it manufactures dont spent millions designing cars for nothing) You could put some nice lovers in the bonnet but the wrong way round so it drags air in ?
Yes the ideal would be a nice front mount but hey if there isnt room ?

Personaly i would fit the chargecooler system but that radiator isnt in the best place, could it be fitted lower down i.e at the back of the front valence with some holes in.? I had a motorbike one on mine witch was about half the size of that one ?

Sorry not realy much help.

i know the top pic is crap posistion but this is where it is as standard i dont want to use this posistion if i can help it but i know it will be ok as a standard type thng.

no room under turbo what so ever, and the rads going on the righthand side of the pic in front of the tranny

the heat exchanger would fit sideways under either of the wheel arch areas sort of the same persistion as down a brace bar/ inner wing type area but i dought itd get enough flow of air.

think ive made a bit of a bo bo lol

could an air to air one go in one of the arches and then have some really good ducting from the front sealed to it ?

That chargcooler rad is enormous. One half that size would do I reckon. especially if you put it at the back and run it in copper pipes. By the time it gets to the rad it'll have lost half its heat.

Why don't you use a standard mini side mount rad for the charge cooler then have your rad for the engine up front?

The charge cooler can go where ever within reason...mines going in dash if there is no room left.lol

dont worry about havin gthe cooelr right above the turbo, thats where mine is, it will heatsoak somewhat when stationary, but it cools down very rapidly as soon as you start moving :)

check clerance with the bonet fitted also, you can extedn the cooler quite a bit above the "slam pannel"

EDIT .. poor location for a chargooler rad tho obviously due to the large heat storage capacity.

not a problem fitting the charge cooler itself in really just the cooling rad part im struggling with.

some very good ideas here.

can a oil cooler be used as a rad for the charge cooler? as wil has pointed out it is a bit big, but to be honest the pic makes it look bigger than it is.
i could fit something like a 13 row oil cooler under the boot floor and use copper pipes front to rear it may be ok?

Is having the heat exchanger above the turbo really that bad?

Not only is there an inch of air (which is a very good thermal insulator) between the two, but it's right behind the grill so the air flow through the gap between the turbo & heat exchanger should be pretty good preventing heat soak when moving, prehaps a water spray on the heat exchanger would help when stationary for prolonged periods of time, but then when you are stationary the turbo isn't boosting anyway.
