Would anyone happen to know the current rating of the mk1 floor mounted dip switch?

i'm trying to decide if i need to rewire the head lights through a relay as i'll be using 80/100W bulbs (16A)

Cheers,

Joe.

When I've used 80/100W bulbs in the past I've always rewired using relays. If you mount them in the engine bay on the drivers side inner wing you can take the high current power source from the starter solenoid terminal that is linked via heavy gauge cable direct to the battery. I also reused the existing cable, this is quite thick and up to the job, it is just the main switch and stalk that gets into bother, this is on later cars though, so you'll need to check the wire gauge on a Mk1.

As Tom said run some relays.

Cheers Tom,

The wires look to be thick enough for the amperage, but you mentioning sourcing the power from the solenoid made me think about where it comes from, ie the light switch on the dash and before that the ign switch.

I think i'll put it through some relays.....

The way I did it means you leave the majority of it alone, and then break into the loom as it comes down the inner wing. The original wiring now becomes the "signal" wiring for the relays, and the main power is sourced from the solenoid. When I did it I fitted 3 relays, one for dip beam, one for full beam, and one for the pair of spots I had on the car in question. Obviously the side lights still work as per normal.

If I remember the MK 1 headlights are connected by bullet connectors,so if you want to keep loom original extend back to a relay mounted by solenoid as Tom mentioned.Don`t forget to add fuse.

Cool cheers chap,

I'm just getting my head around wiring the ECU in, the idea is to combine it with the existing loom and split out some of the old stuff into seperate fuses (rather that the original 2!!)

I have a fuse box with 16 fuses and 4 relays, and i'm running out of relays now lol.

vehicle wiring products,

its actually a relay box (RB4U) and a fuse box (FBB16U) that clip together to make one unit.
