I take it you kept them in order when you dismantled it? Numbered them etc?

You can put them in the wrong way, I did it on the first A series I rebuilt, IIRC it made the engine tigt to turn over but not imposible so it could be this.

If you've got new bearing shells, make sure you've been given the right ones (regardless what they've been stamped with)! On 7th Nov, 2008 Nic said:

Alex On my engine the the "tangs" are both on the same side. unless you have had them reworked you should be able to see evidence of where the tangs used to be.
