they were bolts originally, no idea of the grade but at least one was guaranteed to snap if you looked at it.

I think they were stainless bolts, however I don't think they were anything special, by nature of where they are the extreme heat cycling makes the steel go as hard as rock, this is why they are a cunt to drill out.
