Can't say I blame you Neil. This country hasn't much to offer.

This might help http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/BritonsLivingA...Jobs/DG_4014676

Search for expat, Telegraph has an expat section with some useful info on NI etc. theres probably some forums out there..

Its 20 years since I jumped ship.. but look at it with a jaded eye, grass is always greener etc. It strikes me that most visitors here only see the good things, cheap food, cheap fuel and hot weather, Not the helthcare and Education costs, High insurance because they are all suing each other, and the airconditioner bill.

I have obviously stuck with it, on balance I am probably better off though my pokey litle house I had in Burton-on Trent is worth more than this house!! At this point in my life I will probably stay here, though I'll always be a Brit.. No going native by this boy.

Having said that my kids are on the dark side!!

Good point that, 3 years here.. she was going up the wall. ended up doing volunteer work.

Green card took ages, (and thousands of dollars, paid by my company). I had to advertise my job in the Philly papers to prove that I was not taking an Americans job and got 109 applications. Luckily most were dopes and CT scanner service engineer is not a common skill, even here!! We had to interview 2 but they had bad work records so could be discounted.

Of course my big problem was that I spoke English and had a steady job.....

BTW.. That Immigration office... full of bloody foreigners!!!

I left UK when I was 2 and lived in Australia for 15 years, now I am back here again. To be honest I like it here and I loved it in OZ also (I am a dual citizen which is nice). But as Tel says there is always good and bad points to every country (although it's hard to imagine what they are until your there a few years).

The problem is for most (but not all) home is where you were from inititally and you will always be leaving something or someone behind that you may end up missing a lot (not matter how crummy you think it or they are now). My problem is I am left mixed up as I have memories, friends, famly etc in two different places and no matter where I live I will always be without or missing something or someone.

Cant agree more. I just ordered my marmite and HP sauce online and I am seriously thinking of driving a 4 hour round trip to an English Baker in Frederick Maryland who makes killer porky pies!!

My Mums approaching 90 and I'm over here feeling guilty because I cant see her as much as I should. When I visit the UK I drive around looking at the view and, seriously, a tear comes to my eye ... I miss it.
On Balance though I made the right move.

I didn't mean for that to be soppy! I'm happy here and I get back to OZ every 2-3 years to see the bro and catch up with the craic over there. I don't regret growing up overseas and I never will. But I just think there are a lot of people that will do anything to get out of the UK (not meaning wolfie, just talking generally) and many that do really start to miss stuff they never thought they would miss. Plus palm trees, 40C heat, blue skies, sea breezes, white sand, crystal waters etc can become as mediocre as the rain, rust, cold you left behind. Well not quite but you get the point!

Don't get me started on missing food. We would have broken your arm for a caramac, carbury's buttons, curly wurlys, finger of fudges etc when we were over there. I went back to Oz in october and put on 1.5 stone in 3 weeks as it was a feast of eating everything that you can't get over here.

I lost both my Grandparents (on opposite sides of the family) when I was 7. When my parents broke the news to me, I said "who's Granny/Granda?" I regret not getting to know them and I am glad I got to know my other Gran up until we lost her last year. I know that my parents loosing their parents was a big draw back here again. But like you, I don't consider moving out there a mistake at all and if anyone was to consider imigrating I wouldn't discourage them (although I might have since I said all that!). I'm just trying to put up the other side before anyone would make decisions.

Oh yeah, at the end of summer in OZ everyone is all excited when rain is forcast and everyone dances around in the rain and gets all excited. Where as here everyone feels the same about sun and heat. I loved the rain when I came back here but now, hmmm, I think I would like some sun please!

Wolfie, do it! Try it and see if you like it. You probably will but remember a holiday is way different from living there. I feel like such as sad sack putting a dampner on things but I just feel the need to caution people on this.

Malta (Ex. Scotland)

Makes 2 of us Wolfie.
I was born in Bonnie Scotland and my parents brought me over to Malta when I was 5 (on my lucky birthday too:( ).I've come to like this place well enough to tolerate it and sometimes I truly love it,but other times I feel almost sick when I think of what I still call Home. The Highlands,Edinburgh,Joppa where I grew up,the sweet Scottish rain. . . . ..Someone get me a Kleenex.

I would love to go back, even if it means leaving behind all my mates and family, maybe even a girl.
But money is always a problem and finding work is not easy.
But I don't want to kick the bucket in Malta without having at least tried to get over there.

Sorry I can't really help, but my advice is get out there and try it.

And if you think the UK has nothing to offer you oughta try Malta out for size!!

Wolfie,

If you reach a stage in your life that you feel something must happen, then you HAVE to make it happen - but MUST have a think about how hard you want it to happen... All i knew, is i didn't want to be sat in the same chair, in the same office, doing the same kind of job when i was 40...

Now, my experience is with the USA - as is Tels... Grass being greener is totally the right way to look at it.

I miss England, but the ability to call my mates and shout jokey abuse down the phone at them, and send them crap emails rarely makes things very bearable... Curry? Yes - there are two good places near me. The local Pub? Don't have one anymore - but I don't miss it. Marmite / custard / licourice allsorts / etc - that is what a postal service is for...

Plane tickets are pretty cheap for the odd times I do want to re-visit - but I just look at the UK and think 'OUCH' whenever i look at how much to rent a car for a week, or put fuel in the tank.

Given a choice - Right now - I'd look at Canada as the first option. USA is still up there as a good option - and I do believe it is better than the UK if you are in a position of education such that you will be able to get a good job. Please Note that last sentence well - because I'd hate to be 'poor' in the USA, knowing that i'm in the sh*t if I don't have (and need) medical insurance...

Maybe you just need a change? How about a 90-day holiday? You don't need a visa for that to come to the USA (or Canada i think) - maybe that is enough to leave things alone in the UK, re-charge the batteries, and see the good - and bad - things that different countries have to offer...

Oh - there are pikeys and thieves in the USA; but there are also a massive percentage of folks who religiously go to church on a sunday and will help each other out no matter what.

I still always lock my car when filling up with petrol, Always bolt the front door when cutting the grass in the back yard, still beep / lock the cars on my drive - but I am probably the only one on my part of the road that does...

I wouldn't dream of not doing any of these where i lived in England - in an area of about the same 'standard and style' as where i lived in England (i.e - I'm not comparing the country to the metropolis)...

Another way of looking at it - I've never, ever, seen anyone else with a DiscLok. I have one, and always disclok my mini when i take it out, or my truck if i've got the mini or somet valuble on the trailer.
In England, you even need a DiscLok for a bog-standard Fiesta.

Suffice to say, If you wanted to visit the USA - you'll be welcome to stop here. I've also heard MadMatt in Oz offering a similar gesture in Oz before...

Wherever you go, there are folks all around the world who would probably put you up FOC in return for a little time assisting with whatever (house repairs / renovation / etc). That can make for a very cheap - and enjoyable vacation.

Thats excatly where I got.. Great job, shame about the pay and no chance of advancement. I wanted to stay in this field as I loved it but had to go abroad to make it worthwhile. I look back now, early 30's kids 7 and 4 and I think "that took balls" but at the time it didn't feel that way, it was simply the right thing to do.

i moved out to california when i was 18,stayed with a friend from school for a 2 week's for my birthday loved every minute of it.....
so i cam back sold my car and oter junk i had and went back out the next month, the plan was stay for another 3 weeks and see how it went, after the weeks were up i decided to stay and find a job, that took a few weeks but i got one through a friend and ended up traveling all over the US with him fitting kitchens best job i ever had

so for 3 years i was out there loving it making plans, one of which was to stay for 7 years and go for a citezenship test so i could legally stay out there,

then i got news of my brother dying and it hit home that i wasnt there with my family ,so i had to fly back from mexico city in order for me tobe able to go back at some point in the future,
which ive not not got round to doing at all,
but all in all i think you have to try it before you knock it...

If you live with parents, should be an easy thing to do moving & working abroad.
It must take some serious balls otherwise though. Especially if you have kids etc.
Hats off to anyone that does it, even for a short time. Better to know than always asking yourself....what if? :)
