I noticed there is play in the top arm. All the ball joints are brand new, and so are the wheel bearings, the top arm moves a slight bit on one side.

Is there a pin through the subframe there with bushes on it? I think its going to need doing, and will probably fail on it in the morning!

Second thing i might fail on, do the fuel lines have to be fixed down, at the moment they are just out of the way under the carpet, but not fixed. Could i just tie wrap them in?

Get a whole new top arm, complete with pin - but make sure it's the right one - they both look alike when they're not on the subframe to compare!!!!

Heres my MOT certificate...

Not too bad, he showed me the other things are simple, but there is movement in the top arm when shaking wheel from left to right.
Does anyone know how to work on these? He said theres a pin going through, but he hasnt done one before. I have untill whenever to put it right for a retest though.

It isnt very helpfull in the haynes about how to do it, so ill just go make a start by undoing the ball joints and the shockers and stuff.

This is my MOT...

its better than i expected anyway and i have the rest of the week off to work on it!

top arm is dead easy to remove, jack it and put it on axle stands, remove the wheel, crank the hi-lo's all the way down, undo the large nut on the back of the subframe tower (this is the other end of the top pin) remove shocker, remove 2 x bolts that hold down oval shaped plate under large nut on other end of top pin. You will now need to remove the bump stop under the top arm by lifting the hub with a trolley jack. once the bump stop is removed, drop the car back on to axle stands. Pop the top ball joint off and tilt the hub forward, do not let the weight of the hub rest on the dropped drive shaft! The pin should now be removable towards the front of the car - you do not need to remove the front nut. If it doesn't want to come, give it a lever. As long as there is no pressure on your top arm from the hi-lo's it should slide out easily and the top arm will fall out.

EASY!

Argh i read that after, just got in from garage.

I replaced rear subframe mounts, fitted a choke cable holder, sorted the washer jets and started on the top arm.

The guy that bought my metro turbo has some refurbished top arms! hes bringing them over tomorow night.

So far i followed just the instructions i have above. I didnt find some of the bits its on about though. From the side, i took the wheel off, unid the top ball joint and tilted the hub away. I unscrewed the hilo remembering hte position, and now its loose. I have undone both end nuts on the long shaft. i couldnt work out how the shaft came out though, i gues you push it towards the front?

The other parts of the top arm that you mention, where are these? Wheres the oval shaped plate? I cant see it on the pics in the manual either. The needle roller bearings, are they on the shaft that i took the two end nuts off?

the oval plate is in the engine compartment on the other end of the bolt, it looks like it is part of the subframe but has 2 bolts holding it down, one is captive nut the other is a nut and bolt

Ilkl have to get some pics of the inside of the arm, it was worn away REALLY badly, and really loose. The hole through it was oval!

I now have the suspension arm back on, along wiht a new pin mine was knackered. bought a grease gun today im gonna go pack it up.

Bad news tho, bottom radiator hose fell off and also exhaust is blowing from the clamp, even though there is tonnes of paste there and its really tight.

I did get recognised by two townies in the bus station though by "Ey theres that geezer with the turbo mini from the other day" It must have been from the lap round town i did!
