Here's one for the computer buffs.

I have 2 PCs running windows XP. I want to be able to access them both from each other, I believe this is possible, I have got a link cable and connected them both together and run the net work wizard many times trying different names , the same names, ect, etc. I have no joy.

Do i need a hub and tell each PC to look fro that?

Cheers chaps.

You either need a hub or a crossover cable.

the standard network cable is wired 1-1 2-2 etc a crossover is wired 1-2 2-1 etc (just an example)

This way the send of one computer is connected to the receive of the other and Vice versa. some more intelligent nic cards will do this automatically.

A hub, switch or router does the crossover for you.

First test to try when connecting is a ping, do you need instructions on how to ping??

Unless you have fancy nics a standard network cable will not work. Also unless you set the addresses correctly it will not work.
What are you trying to set up here, just 2 computers talking to each other or is one or both going to be on the internet?

Buy a router....

I did, and I can link 2 computers together :)

Trying to link them directly, is a bloody pain in the arse.

And with a router, broadband on both is easy.

Yup, thats what we decided.. he's off to buy one. Plus its a firewall so you can turn the software firewall off and that makes local networks a lot easier.

On the computer that you want to access, go into "My Computer" right click on the drive you want to share, then select "Sharing & Security" then check "Share this folder".

You should then be able to see it from the other computer by opening "My Network Places"

Best of luck.

Try running the Network Setup Wizard in Control Panel.

Just called Matt but obviously on a Saturday night you have better things to do!
Lets try step through this. Firstly make sure any firwalls are off or at least open them up for the other computer/s

I would use fixed ip addresses. skip this step if you want to keep using DHCP.

Firstly its better to use fixed IP addresses if you want to share, its possible with DHCP but more stable if the ip addresses are fixed. Look into your router instructions on how to turn off DHCP on the PC end and assign some fixed IP addresses. Its normally something like 192.168.0.? assign 10 fixed addresses eg 1-10. The ip address of the router will probably be 192.168.0.1

Then you go into your main pc and in control panel click on
- networking>tcpip>properties.

here you set the first IP address eg 192.168.0.2 and set DNS server as the router address e.g 192.168.0.1

Once this is done reboot the computer and make sure the internet still works. If it does do the same thing to the next computer but use 192.168.0.3 ansd so on for all your pc's.

At this point all should work on the Internet.

Next check that each computer has a seperate name and each are on the same workgroup, it makes things easier.

Control panel>system>computername tab

Click on <change>
give each computer a different name and give all of them the same workgroup. WORKGROUP is the default, its OK but I use something different.

Now you have set everything up the only thing to do is make every computer knows the login of the others. One way is to have all your computers use the same username and password, another is to add the other computers username/password to each computer go to control panel>users to do this.

Now we finally connect..

At each computer right click on each disk or printer or whatever you want to share and click on <share>

Click on <new share> and give it a name then <OK>

By this point all this stuff will probably be available in "local network" but if not open the run or command prompt and type

(The server messes this up so here it is phonetically*smiley*
backslash,backslash192.168.0.2backslash (or whatever the ip address of the computer you want to go to is) or you can try using the computer name instead but still use the backslashes.

Magically all the stuff you shared will pop up in a box, you can then make shortcuts to them.

Longwinded, yes but its more stable this way.

If it does not work now, then do the following.....................
