in my rally car my engines got a fault, but hoping it will be resolved with an oil pump change (fault of low pressure)

i was planning to fit a turbo oil pump because of the better flow rate. how ever i have been told by the person who previously built the engine that turbo pump wont fit, not sure why

"Dont fir turbo pump it wont fit the casing just fit the std sure flow pump from mini spares do not but an AE pump they are s***e, the pump was replaced when the engine was built i never use 2nd hand pumps"

his exact message sent to me

has anyone come across this then? can i modify the housing at all the accept the pump

regards

small bore and large bore pumps are different, but only is as far as how spaced out from the block they are (as far as I know)

i thought the turbo pump is a direct replacement for any large bore pump, but may be wrong?

its on a large bore aswell, just a wee bit confused as to why he said it then

and tell you what, as people on turbo minis seem to actualy know your stuff, ill ask my actual problems/symptom in here

n my rally today i had to retire with engine problems, oil pressure was at 0PSI, i had to take 3 more corners before i had a safe place to stop, i did a handbrake left and oil pressure raised....has a central oil pickup btw
symptoms, oil pressure dropped, when i stopped and left standing 20 mins or maybe more given time for oil to cool and thus thicken. Upon starting oil pressure raised to 40psi even while engine revved, usualy pressure raises till about 65odd (till pressure is released at a guess)
as i was limping from the stage tho and as oil heated up pressure would drop till oil light came on again and pressure at 0. back at services it was deemed oil pump is probably worn not supplying sufficient pressure?
i did accidently slip it into 1st at high revs, about to go 2nd at about 6.5k revs went to 1st didnt full engage the clutch whacked into 3rd...at a guess over revving on the cam drive the oil pump? long shot perhaps

also engine crank case pressure is high and beathing alot into catch tank, breathing enough that it was escaping corners of the bonnet, connected anyway? or just purly ring sealing issue.

right in order to prevent this kinda thing happening in the future, is there anyway to fit ether an external oil pump or external electonic one?
and incase it does fail i want to/would like to maintain a amount of oil pressure and seen this ->link mocal oil pressure accumulators. not sure if its somthing that can be plumbed into a mini or not oompf.gif

thanks in advance

Sounds like there is an engine rebuild in order.

Low oil pressure is not nescisarly just down to work oil pump. A worn oil pump is usualy acompanied by a worn crank and bearings.

Loss of oil pressure you describe can also be as a result of the center oil pick up pipe, the older type has very little of the gauze exposed to the fresh oil and its at the very bottom of the sump where all the crap gathers. if the gauze is even a little clogged up, it will restrict oil flow and cause the pump to cavitate, for want of a better word. If the pick up pipe is not one of the Minispares latest ones, replace it with one. I recently pulled a 3000mile engine apart that suffered low oil pressures intermitantly and all i could see as being a problem was the pick up pipe. replaced that, the oil pump and the relief valve and its been so far fine.

Not being funny but you did check there was a decent level of oil in the engine?

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

yeah. it was breathing heavy out of breather so had to top it up for 2nd stage but by time i retired it was still at same level

enigne builder/previous owner said from what he remember crank was at 10/10

got COP but not sure what type it is

anyone wanna buy a rally car? engines mint condition >_< honest only done 1 event and already wanna move onto somthing competative/decent
