I've had a search on suppliers of kit's but not found the thread I was looking for, the links were out of date on many.

So, anyone used one of these kits? Advice welcome

Cheers lads, if you get the info from work David, that could be good. Probably won't have ordered one by then anyway.

Nic, no it's for the road mini, trying to get it all sorted for York. I'd be disappointed if the brand new turbo on the TT needed a rebuild after about 300 miles!

ah yes that would be slightly annoying

Hmm how many miles do you do in it? Would it be worth spending the couple of extra notes on the genuine kit?
Saying that the only difference may be the fact that the gen one comes with some extra stuff like extra seals and nuts, hmmmmmmmmm

I have considered that Nic, do about 8000 miles a year, turbo should be good for A LOT more than that though.

I think running it at 15psi on the TT goosed it. Also I don't water cool it which will limit its life.

check your oil drains, thats what killed a few tubo's for me, god knows it took me ages and 3 turbo's to discover that was the cause :( they really do need to be very clear, very large and very downhill.

defo buy the garretts one,
had you already dismantled the turbo to lool for shaft wear, does it have a good play or does it just smoke?
I complete evo about oil drain and crank case pressure , kill turbo that fast , 15 psi shouldn't have endomaged it. they are runnig this boost on diesel application for thousands of miles

Not checked the turbo yet, it makes a 'siren' type whine when spooling and smokes at tickover.

I'll investigate oil return, there is some crankcase pressure, obviously, but not excessive.

Hummm. Ok had a chance to have a look at it. The is some lateral play, but no more than I'd expect/seen before. The is no end-to-end play that can be felt.

So now I'm wondering if the turbo is worn at all.

what's this soung when spooling, the siren whining thing doesn't call me,
does it make boost? and does it make a nice audible pshiiiii when spooling ?
a small lateral play is normal,
to know if tickover smoke is from healthy or normal because of crankcase pressure, connect the vaccum line to carb , if it still smoke , exhaust seal or piston rings have gone , if it stop smoking, crankcase pressure is the cause.

Excellent advice, will try when I get the carb rebuilt this week. Guides done less then 3k ago, so possible rings problem, but ring problems generally cause smoke all the time, getting worse with rpm?

And yes, makes boost, ask Matt what sound it makes when I change gear (kinda like the old cosworths).

the piston clips, i always break the old ones off, put them on i just lever them into place.

they just push into the housings , should be able to feel if they go in correctly

just make you you check the piston clip eats throughly when you push the shaft with the clip into the body just try give it just a little pull if it comes out easy then housing might be too worn

check the bearings after you put them in with the shaft too (we sent one away that wasnt checked and destroyed the exhaust, body. top plate, exhaust and shaft and compresser wheel...i didnt build that one tho)

"but ring problems generally cause smoke all the time, getting worse with rpm?" :
blow by doesn't necesseraly make smoking , but does pressurise the crankcase, oil have a better way to pass thru turbine shaft seals (comp and turbine one), this is worse at tickover as the compressor is at neg/atmospherique pressure, then as you rev it does have more pressure than the crankcase in the compressor hsg , same for comp hsg, oil now have less tendancy to pass thru seals .

That makes a lot of sense, cheers Fab.

My plan is to bang the turbo back on, fix the return blockage, and add a breather on the rocker cover.
