Hey lads,
a bit OT but need some expert help.
Pulled a cylinder head off a mate's totally stock 850 cos the head gasket had gone.
Took it apart, cleaned tons of carbon out of it,lapped the valves in,put it back together and fitted it this morning.
Set what tappets we could(some of the adjusting screws snapped) and fired it up.
Fired up first twist of the key(I kid you not) but sounds like a bloody tractor. When you rev it smooths out but on idle it vibrates like hell and sounds like shit, like its only turning about 300rpm or something.
Thought the plug order was wrong so checked em out but all was fine.
Then removed each HT lead in turn while it was idling and the noise did not change one bit.

Not sure what to do next. We're blaming the torque wrench. We're not sure it's working properly (as my mate has been using it as a breaker bar) so maybe the head is not sufficiently torqued down leading to loss of compression??
Any suggestions?Engine used to run sweet as a nut before the blowout.

BTW here's a vid of the sick little puppy idling. The vibration didn't come out in the vid, dunno why.

Thanks a lot.
Tom

Sounds like the exhaust manifold isn't sat on the head right.

Hmm. But how would that explain the noise not changing when the leads were removed? And the fact it was barely idling?

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

tom check the compression first then get another wrench and re torque it down

then make sure the valve clearences are set CORRECTLY !

then make sure the leads are on the right way around, i know you have checked this but... re check it again

How do i check the compression? With one of those gauge things that fit instead of the spark plug?

Right best get some new rockers for it then.

What do you mean by blowing Snakeii? It's the same old carb it had before.
Valve clearance?? Do you mean tappet clearance Steve?
