Hi,

I've been rebuilding my HIF44 turbo carb today and the rebuild kit contains a different disc to that fitted in my carb. I have never seen a disc like the existing one. Has anyone ever seen one of these before and if so can you explain the difference? Should I keep the old one or fit the new one?

The new disc is totally plain, right ? the old one has a spring/poppet valve, right ? If so, fit the plain one. :)

The poppet in the left hand disc is to prevent turbo turbine stall, as the throttle is closed in a standard car the poppet opens to stop compressor stall.

However its a major obstruction to flow with the butterfly open so it is better to remove it as others have said.
If you do this, you really need to fit a dumpvalve, as otherwise there is nothing stopping the turbo stalling, and turbine stall kills turbochargers.

Thanks Tom/Dave - I'll fit the new (plain) disc as I've got a Bailey DV to fit. Thanks Minimagic for getting the pix to work!!

I read that it was fitted to reduce emissions on over run, and was fitted to many NASP HIFs.

I've personally never seen one on a NA SU.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

You'll find them on the 'economy' metro 998 varianets, which also have the external 'bypass hose'...

So yes - they are on nat-asp.

They are also on almost every Rover V8 HIF carb - and cause of many a wierd idle speed variance.

The poppet valve is pretty common over here, especially on Stromberg carbs starting with emissions tests in the late 60's. I think the idea is that on the overrun a little air is leaked through to help burn any left over fuel.

Ive seen another type of carb with a similair looking thing to the poppet except it was fixed and hour glass shaped.

Its supposed to split the air. I cant remember where i saw it tho.

1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.
